It\u2019s antisemitic gasoline on an open fire.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The fears were compounded when past posts about fighting antisemitism were<a href=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/2026\/01\/01\/us-news\/jewish-civil-rights-group-demands-answers-from-mamdani-after-posts-about-antisemitism-scrubbed-from-nyc-mayors-x-account\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">\u00a0scrubbed from the Big Apple\u2019s official mayoral X account<\/a>,\u00a0prompting an ominous response by Jarmeet Dhillon, assistant attorney general for civil rights in the DOJ.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe will be extremely vigilant @CivilRights as to ANY AND ALL violations of religious liberties in NYC,\u201d Dhillon posted on X.<\/p>\n<p>NYC Mayor Eric Adams at the Western Wall in Jerusalem, Israel, on Nov. 16, 2025. X\/@NYCMayor<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe will investigate, sue, and indict as needed.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Mamdani <a href=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/2026\/01\/02\/us-news\/zohran-mamdani-proudly-stands-by-executive-order-changing-definition-of-antisemitism-after-backlash\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">effectively brushed off the brewing backlash<\/a>, unapologetically standing by his decision to wipe out all orders issued by Adams after the now-former mayor was\u00a0hit with federal corruption charges\u00a0in September 2024.<\/p>\n<p>He argued revoking Adams\u2019 executive orders gave his administration a \u201cclean slate\u201d \u2013 and insisted in a long-winded response that the city under his watch will aggressively fight hate and \u201cprotect Jewish New Yorkers.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The Post\u2019s latest on NYC Mayor Zohran Mamdani\u2019s inauguration day celebration:<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMy administration will also be marked by a city government that will be relentless in its efforts to combat hate and division, and we will showcase that by fighting hate across the city, and that includes fighting the scourge of antisemitism by actually funding hate crime prevention, by celebrating our neighbors, and by practicing a politics of universality,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>Sen. AFP via Getty Images<\/p>\n<p>The new Hizzoner\u00a0has\u00a0also vowed to reissue certain Adams orders he supported, such as one to maintain the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/2025\/05\/13\/us-news\/mayor-adams-takes-page-out-of-trumps-playbook-launches-task-force-to-fight-antisemitism\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Office to Combat Antisemitism<\/a>\u00a0and a directive to the NYPD on responding to protests at religious buildings.<\/p>\n<p>The new administration plans to make changes to those orders, but have not released the details.<\/p>\n<p>Still, the revoked orders included one signed by Adams just last month that barred city officials from boycotting or divesting from Israel.<\/p>\n<p>Mayor Zohran Mamdani signs executive orders at a presser at 85 Clarkson Ave. in Brooklyn, Thursday, Jan. 1, 2026. AP<\/p>\n<p>Another repealed order adopted the International Holocaust Remembrance Alliance\u2019s definition of antisemitism, which Adams\u2019 administration said included \u201cdemonizing Israel and holding it to double standards as forms of contemporary antisemitism.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The IHRA definition is considered by many Jewish leaders to be the standard in fighting antisemitism, though it\u2019s controversial because many detractors argue it serves to stifle legitimate criticism of Israel.<\/p>\n<p>The revocation of both orders drew a fiery response from Israeli officials and local Jewish organizations.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe Mayor of New York said he would be a mayor for everyone, yet he is taking dangerous steps in the exact opposite direction,\u201d Ambassador Ofir Akunis, the consul general of Israel in New York, said in a statement.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe decisions to revoke the IHRA definition of antisemitism and to allow for boycotts against Israel are actions that pose an immediate threat to the safety of Jewish communities in New York City and could lead to an increase in violent antisemitic attacks throughout the city,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSingling out Israel for sanctions is not the way to make Jewish New Yorkers feel included and safe, and will undermine any words to that effect. Bringing New Yorkers together and building broad coalitions will be foundational to the mayor\u2019s ability to advance a more inclusive New York,\u201d said a coalition of Jewish groups, including UJA-Federation.<\/p>\n<p>Rory Lancman, a Jewish civil rights lawyer and former city councilman, added: \u201cThese are critical tools to combat antisemitism that Mamdani is dismantling, and doing so makes Jewish New Yorkers less safe and less able to assert their rights under the City\u2019s human rights law.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Mamdani also<a href=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/2026\/01\/01\/us-news\/mayor-zohran-mamdani-issues-sweeping-executive-order-that-wipes-out-most-eos-issued-by-adams-after-indictment\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">\u00a0amended last month\u2019s Executive Order 61<\/a>, which directed the NYPD to tighten enforcement to protect religious sites from harassment from protesters \u2014 including setting up zones where demonstrations would be prohibited within a certain distance from the entrance of a church, mosque, or synagogue.<\/p>\n<p>How it was amended remained unclear Friday morning.<\/p>\n<p>The Israel Foreign Ministry\u2019s tweet on Mamdani\u2019s executive orders. @IsraelMFA\/X<\/p>\n<p>Zohran Mamdani speaks at his ceremonial inauguration as mayor at City Hall on Jan. 1 in New York City. REUTERS<\/p>\n<p>Prominent New York Republicans also wasted no time ripping Mamdani as an extremist in thrall to antisemitic allies.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMayor Mamdani wasted no time showing New Yorkers exactly who he is,\u201d said Bruce Blakeman, executive for Nassau County and a Republican gubernatorial candidate, in a statement.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHis very first executive action as mayor was not to address crime, public safety, or quality of life \u2014 it was to repeal protections for Jewish people. At a moment of exploding antisemitism, Mamdani sent a message that Jewish concerns are negotiable and Jewish safety is optional. It\u2019s indefensible.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cZohran is officially the face of the Democrat Party,\u201d Rep. Mike Lawler (R-NY) posted on X.<\/p>\n<p>Brooklyn Republican Councilwoman Inna Vernikov, like Blakeman, urged Gov. Kathy Hochul to stand up to Mamdani.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Hochul could adopt the IHRA definition of antisemitism statewide, Vernikov argued.<\/p>\n<p>\u201c@GovKathyHochul can fix this with the stroke of a pen! Will she stand up to Mamdani or will she cower to avoid a Mamdani primary? The Jewish community is watching!\u201d she posted on X.<\/p>\n<p>Mamdani on Friday acknowledged the concerns over dropping the IHRA definition, though he stopped short of actually addressing the worries.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI also know that a number, as you said, of leading Jewish organizations have immense concerns around this definition, so what we will do is actually deliver on our commitment to protect Jewish New Yorkers in a manner that is able to actually fulfill that,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>\u2014 Additional reporting by Carl Campanile and Matthew Fischetti<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"That didn\u2019t take long.
