{"id":489089,"date":"2026-01-03T09:07:28","date_gmt":"2026-01-03T09:07:28","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/489089\/"},"modified":"2026-01-03T09:07:28","modified_gmt":"2026-01-03T09:07:28","slug":"marc-lasry-exploring-bid-for-wnbas-connecticut-sun","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/489089\/","title":{"rendered":"Marc Lasry Exploring Bid for WNBA\u2019s Connecticut Sun"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tBillionaire <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sportico.com\/t\/marc-lasry\/\" id=\"auto-tag_marc-lasry_2\" data-tag=\"marc-lasry\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Marc Lasry<\/a> is considering a bid to buy the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sportico.com\/t\/wnba\/\" id=\"auto-tag_wnba_2\" data-tag=\"wnba\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">WNBA<\/a>\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sportico.com\/t\/connecticut-sun\/\" id=\"auto-tag_connecticut-sun_2\" data-tag=\"connecticut-sun\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Connecticut Sun<\/a>, according to someone familiar with the talks who was granted anonymity because the details are private.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tIn May, the owners of the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sportico.com\/business\/team-sales\/2025\/wnba-connecticut-sun-sale-allen-company-1234852063\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Sun\u00a0hired<\/a> investment bank Allen &amp; Company to explore the sale of the franchise. Mohegan Sun, a subsidiary of Mohegan Tribal Gaming Authority, has owned the club since it relocated from Orlando in 2003.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tLasry declined to comment, while Allen &amp; Company did not respond to a request to comment.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tConnecticut Gov. Ned Lamont <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.wtnh.com\/news\/connecticut\/gov-ned-lamont-backs-bid-to-keep-connecticut-sun-in-the-state\/\">told reporters<\/a> earlier this month he supported a bid to keep the team in state, as politicians in Massachusetts and Rhode Island looked to bring the club to their locales. The Sun are the only major professional sports franchise in the state.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tLamont said the Connecticut bid was backed by a \u201cformer owner of an NBA team.\u201d Lasry sold his 25% stake in the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sportico.com\/t\/milwaukee-bucks\/\" id=\"auto-tag_milwaukee-bucks_2\" data-tag=\"milwaukee-bucks\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Milwaukee Bucks<\/a> to Jimmy and Dee Haslam in 2023 at a $3.2 billion team valuation. Lamont added that if the bid was successful, the Sun would play \u201ca lot\u201d of games at the PeoplesBank Arena in Hartford. The arena, originally known as the Hartford Civic Center, is undergoing a $145 million renovation, with $118 million in funding from the state. The Sun currently play at the Mohegan Sun Arena in Uncasville.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tBefore 2025, the Sun had made the playoffs eight straight seasons. A flurry of moves last winter sent stars such as Alyssa Thomas and DiJonai Carrington elsewhere, and the team now has the WNBA\u2019s worst record at 4-21.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tThe Sun play in the WNBA\u2019s smallest media market, and speculation has swirled that the sale will include a franchise relocation. Connecticut\u2019s current practice setup has drawn criticism from Sun players. The Mohegan tribe has priority at the venue, and community events have left Sun with half a court to practice on at times.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tStill, the franchise\u2019s monetary value is up from where it was just a few years ago, as the cost of buying a WNBA team has skyrocketed.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tThe last WNBA control sale was in 2021 when real estate investor Larry Gottesdiener led a group that bought the Atlanta Dream for between $7 million and $10 million. A year earlier, Mark Davis paid roughly $2 million for the Las Vegas Aces.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tThe recent round of W expansion reflects the gains. San Francisco and Toronto were each awarded an expansion franchise for $50 million in 2023 and 2024, while the Portland Fire cost $75 million last year. Last month, the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sportico.com\/leagues\/basketball\/2025\/cleveland-detroit-philadelphia-wnba-expansion-teams-1234858531\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">WNBA awarded<\/a> teams to Cleveland, Detroit and Philadelphia at $250 million expansion fees before any startup costs or investments in facilities.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tAllen &amp; Company led the W\u2019s most recent expansion process. The WNBA initially wanted to add one team, but the robust interest, including bids by more than 10 groups, triggered three new clubs that will join between 2028 and 2030.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tThe hyper-growth for almost every WNBA financial and engagement metric has set up a tricky CBA negotiation between the league and union, which opted out of the current CBA after the 2024 season.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tLasry is the co-founder of Avenue Capital, which has more than $11 billion in assets under management. The private equity firm raised nearly\u00a0<a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.sportico.com\/business\/finance\/2024\/marc-lasry-sports-fund-raise-angel-city-nwsl-1234784064\/\">$450 million<\/a>\u00a0to launch a sports-specific fund. Lasry\u2019s recent sports investments include franchises in TGL, SailGP and PBR, as well as women\u2019s basketball startup Unrivaled.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tThe billionaire also explored buying Angel City FC and the North Carolina Courage in the NWSL. Willow Bay and Bob Iger bought Angel City in a deal that <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.sportico.com\/business\/team-sales\/2024\/angel-city-sale-deal-willow-bay-bob-iger-1234789604\/\">valued the team<\/a> at $250 million. The <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.sportico.com\/leagues\/soccer\/2024\/marc-lasry-no-longer-pursuing-nwsls-courage-1234817726\/\">Courage talks<\/a> fell apart late last year due to complications surrounding the league\u2019s rules around private equity ownership. The WNBA does not allow private equity firms to own control stakes in franchises.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tLasry has deep ties to Connecticut. He was born in Morocco but moved to the U.S. as a child and grew up in West Hartford. He now owns a home in Westport.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tLast month, the Sun were valued at $180 million in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sportico.com\/feature\/wnba-team-values-rankings-list-1234784563\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Sportico\u2019s WNBA team valuations<\/a>.
