\u201cTexas Legacy: Hidden Gems from the Collection,\u201d a forthcoming exhibition by the San Antonio Art League + Museum (SAAL+M), offers a rare glimpse at the organization\u2019s extensive collection. <\/p>\n

Many works, paintings and sculptures alike, haven\u2019t been exhibited to the public in decades \u2014 12 decades to be exact \u2014 and offer a subjective view of the state\u2019s evolving creative hutzpah. The exhibition, which opens Sunday, Jan. 11, also will feature the dedication of a new sculpture acquired for the museum\u2019s permanent collection by San Antonio metal artists Luis \u201cChispas\u201d Guerrero and James Wyatt Hendricks. <\/p>\n

Operated entirely by volunteers, the SAAL+M is committed to preserving and presenting works of Texas art, be they landscapes, representational imagery or boldly abstract works. The organization also is committed to supporting artists and providing free public access to exhibitions, educational programs and community events. <\/p>\n

By bringing this artwork back into the public view, the SAAL+M effectively re-contextualizes and reflects on the importance of preservation and the value of contextual rediscovery, according to officials with the organization. <\/p>\n

Founded in 1914 and opening its current doors in 1988, the SAAL+M is one of the city\u2019s oldest cultural institutions and the only collecting art museum in the historic King William Arts District. <\/p>\n

Free, opening reception 3-5 p.m. Sunday, Jan. 11, and 10 a.m.-3 p.m. Tuesday-Saturday through Friday, Feb. 20, San Antonio Art League + Museum, 130 King William St., (210) 860-9468, saalm.org.<\/p>\n
