{"id":490267,"date":"2026-01-03T21:15:11","date_gmt":"2026-01-03T21:15:11","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/490267\/"},"modified":"2026-01-03T21:15:11","modified_gmt":"2026-01-03T21:15:11","slug":"earthquake-with-a-preliminary-magnitude-of-6-5-rattles-southern-and-central-mexico","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/490267\/","title":{"rendered":"Earthquake with a preliminary magnitude of 6.5 rattles southern and central Mexico"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"EkqkG IGXmU nlgHS yuUao MvWXB TjIXL aGjvy ebVHC \">MEXICO CITY &#8212; A strong <a class=\"zZygg UbGlr iFzkS qdXbA WCDhQ DbOXS tqUtK GpWVU iJYzE \" data-testid=\"prism-linkbase\" href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/hub\/earthquakes\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">earthquake<\/a> rattled southern and central Mexico on Friday, interrupting President <a class=\"zZygg UbGlr iFzkS qdXbA WCDhQ DbOXS tqUtK GpWVU iJYzE \" data-testid=\"prism-linkbase\" href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/hub\/claudia-sheinbaum\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Claudia Sheinbaum<\/a>\u2019s first press briefing of the new year as seismic alarms sounded.<\/p>\n<p class=\"EkqkG IGXmU nlgHS yuUao lqtkC TjIXL aGjvy \">The earthquake had a preliminary magnitude of 6.5 and its epicenter was near the town of San Marcos in the southern state of Guerrero near the Pacific coast resort of Acapulco, according to <a class=\"zZygg UbGlr iFzkS qdXbA WCDhQ DbOXS tqUtK GpWVU iJYzE \" data-testid=\"prism-linkbase\" href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/hub\/mexico\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Mexico<\/a> \u2019s national seismological agency.<\/p>\n<p class=\"EkqkG IGXmU nlgHS yuUao lqtkC TjIXL aGjvy \">The state\u2019s civil defense agency reported various landslides around Acapulco and on other highways in the state.<\/p>\n<p class=\"EkqkG IGXmU nlgHS yuUao lqtkC TjIXL aGjvy \">Residents and tourists in Mexico City and Acapulco rushed into the streets when the shaking began.<\/p>\n<p class=\"EkqkG IGXmU nlgHS yuUao lqtkC TjIXL aGjvy \">The U.S. Geological Survey said the earthquake occurred at a depth of 21.7 miles (35 kilometers), 2.5 miles north-northwest of Rancho Viejo, Guerrero, which is in the mountains about 57 miles northeast of Acapulco. <\/p>\n<p class=\"EkqkG IGXmU nlgHS yuUao lqtkC TjIXL aGjvy \">Sheinbaum, who resumed her press briefing a short time later, said she spoke with Guerrero&#8217;s Gov.
