A coastal flooding alert is in place this weekend for B.C.\u2019s South Coast, including Metro Vancouver and parts of southern Vancouver Island.<\/p>\n

Crews will inspect tide gates and use a drone to assess the condition of the Southlands shoreline dike, according to the bulletin.<\/p>\n

The city says extra shelter spaces<\/a> will be open due to the heavy rainfall and colder temperatures.<\/p>\n

The city recommends residents and businesses in low-lying areas to keep watch for heavy rainfall and pooling water, and asks residents to avoid impacted shorelines.<\/p>\n

It also reminded residents not to walk, bike, drive or swim through flood waters.<\/p>\n

Avalanche danger<\/p>\n

Avalanche Canada is warning the stormy weather has created potentially dangerous conditions that could cause avalanches on Saturday and Sunday in alpine areas on Vancouver\u2019s North Shore mountains and the Gibsons area, along with an area east of\u00a0Prince\u00a0George, while the risk is considerable between Squamish and Whistler. <\/p>\n

The agency says the risk is also considerable, or level three-out-of-five on its avalanche danger-rating scale, from the Nakusp area to mountains north of\u00a0Prince\u00a0George, along with an area north of Smithers in northwestern\u00a0B.C. <\/p>\n

The danger in the area is ranked as \u201chigh\u201d \u2014 the fourth-highest risk category on a scale of five \u2014 meaning natural avalanches are likely and human-triggered avalanches are very likely. <\/p>\n
