Taft\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/chicagotribune.newspapers.com\/article\/chicago-tribune-taft-nominee-sherman-hi\/174911225\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">renomination as Republican candidate<\/a> at the party\u2019s convention in Chicago was met with stormy opposition from former President Theodore Roosevelt, who then broke away to form the Progressive, or Bull Moose Party, which also had its convention in Chicago. (Chicago Tribune historical photo)<\/p>\n<p><strong>1937:<\/strong> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.chicagotribune.com\/1987\/06\/22\/june-22-1937-joe-louis-ushers-in-a-new-boxing-era\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Joe Louis<\/a> became heavyweight boxing champion of the world by <a href=\"https:\/\/chicagotribune.newspapers.com\/article\/chicago-tribune-joe-louis-calls-braddock\/174912316\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">dethroning James Braddock<\/a> in front of 41,675 paying customers in Comiskey Park. By the time this advertisement was published in the Tribune in 1950, there were six locations in the Chicago area. (Chicago Tribune)<\/p>\n<p><strong>1940:<\/strong> The original Dairy Queen opened at 501 N. Chicago St. in Joliet.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/chicagotribune.newspapers.com\/image\/389601505\/?article=ef6f7be1-0218-4837-807b-00dda57c0679&amp;terms=%22sherwood%20noble%22\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Sherwood Noble<\/a> (known as Sherb) started selling soft-serve ice cream \u2014 which had been created by his friend J.F. McCullough \u2014 at his Kankakee ice cream store in 1938. He chose the name of the new shop to reflect his belief, \u201cthe cow was the queen on the dairy industry.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Noble died in 1991, and Warren Buffett\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.chicagotribune.com\/1999\/08\/03\/in-a-fast-food-universe-dairy-queens-a-star\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Berkshire Hathaway<\/a> acquired Dairy Queen in 1997.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"wp-embedded-content\" data-secret=\"DSuovFjLmJ\">\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.chicagotribune.com\/2021\/09\/09\/ohare-international-airport-timeline-from-farm-to-global-terminal\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">O\u2019Hare International Airport: From farm to global terminal<\/a><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p><strong>1949:<\/strong> The Douglas airport became <a href=\"https:\/\/chicagotribune.newspapers.com\/article\/chicago-tribune-council-oks-ohare-mei\/165498070\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">O\u2019Hare Field<\/a> and Northerly Island airport became Merrill C.
