A Berry Bowl of Martian Spherules <\/b>

Explanation: <\/b>
\nHow were these unusual Martian spherules created? <\/p>\n

Thousands of
\nunusual gray spherules<\/a> made of
\niron<\/a> and rock and dubbed
\nblueberries<\/a>
\nwere found embedded in and
\nsurrounding rocks<\/a> near the
\nlanding site<\/a> of the robot
\nOpportunity rover<\/a> on
\nMars<\/a> in 2004. <\/p>\n

To help investigate their origin, Opportunity found a
\nsurface dubbed the Berry Bowl with an indentation that was
\nrich in the Martian orbs<\/a>. <\/p>\n

The Berry Bowl is
\npictured here<\/a>, imaged during rover’s 48th
\nMartian day<\/a>. <\/p>\n

The average size of a Martian blueberry rock
\nis only about 4 millimeters across. <\/p>\n

By
\nanalyzing<\/a> a circular patch in the rock surface
\nto the left of the densest patch of
\nspherules<\/a>,
\nOpportunity obtained data showing that the
\nunderlying rock has a much different composition than the
\nhematite<\/a> rich
\nblueberries<\/a>. <\/p>\n

This information contributes to the
\ngrowing consensus that these small, strange,
\ngray orbs were slowly deposited from a bath of
\ndirty water<\/a>.<\/p>\n
