{"id":492405,"date":"2026-01-04T19:15:18","date_gmt":"2026-01-04T19:15:18","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/492405\/"},"modified":"2026-01-04T19:15:18","modified_gmt":"2026-01-04T19:15:18","slug":"masks-return-to-new-york-hospitals-amid-2026-super-flu-outbreak","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/492405\/","title":{"rendered":"Masks return to New York hospitals amid 2026 \u2018super flu\u2019 outbreak"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"IBUZKGAQCFCLXCMXSN2J2S6D6U\">STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. \u2014 In case you weren\u2019t aware of how serious the flu outbreak in New York is, Capital District hospitals are asking visitors to mask up. <\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"OHYHB4TK7ZBNZEUNBJMALRJJ5I\">Yes, that\u2019s right: Masks are making a comeback in 2026. <\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"Y3GXQUDLVRAADNLETBR3OWIHP4\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.news10.com\/news\/warren-county\/warren-county-warren-county\/capital-region-hospitals-add-masking-policies-amid-record-flu-cases\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">According to reporting by ABC News 10<\/a>, institutions like Glens Falls Hospital and Saratoga Hospital alerted the public via social media to the mask ask in order \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/GlensFallsHospital\/posts\/pfbid02tFJKPBnALnr3FV1b6cFmuNoHJj6rPiLH9n1GnQTQfS5Qh3zVrmS2fSi81QGqo7Jql?rdid=Xmq0yApuyzvbGZIp\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">to help prevent the spread of respiratory viruses,<\/a>\u201d in the case of Glens Falls.<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"GD3A22S7TBCAPITCJ3WYUAFDNM\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/photo.php?fbid=1254655103153294&amp;set=a.283554810263333&amp;id=100058264471635&amp;checkpoint_src=any\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">According to a Facebook post from the New York City Department of Health and Mental Hygiene<\/a>, the number of flu cases reported is \u201ccurrently higher than the peaks of the previous two flu seasons.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"YA2JGODGXRFYJJHA4QTIOBQ6V4\">A strain of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.silive.com\/health\/2025\/12\/staten-island-flu-cases-off-the-charts-as-super-flu-slams-new-york.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.silive.com\/health\/2025\/12\/staten-island-flu-cases-off-the-charts-as-super-flu-slams-new-york.html\">Influenza A virus called H3, dubbed the \u2018super flu,\u2019<\/a> because of its severity, is hitting hardest, <a href=\"https:\/\/nyshc.health.ny.gov\/web\/nyapd\/new-york-state-flu-tracker\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/nyshc.health.ny.gov\/web\/nyapd\/new-york-state-flu-tracker\">the state agency reports.<\/a> Ninety-five percent of cases in New York have been influenza A\/H3, while 5% have been influenza A\/H1, according to the agency\u2019s most recently published data.<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"MDOOVGK4RRGKNFBAZOSRTJRUDM\">In the U.S. the 2025-2025 flu season has been dominated by the H3N2 variant, which accounts for 86% of Influenza A cases, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.silive.com\/health\/2026\/01\/staten-islands-super-flu-outbreak-hospitalizations-climb.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">according to Dr. Ana Mendez<\/a>, chief of Ambulatory Pediatrics at Richmond University Medical Center in West Brighton.<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"BLLBCSU7M5DVHNJPGGCP7TKLDM\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.silive.com\/news\/2022\/09\/flu-season-2022-when-does-it-start-in-the-united-states.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">The flu is a contagious respiratory illness<\/a> caused by influenza viruses that infect the nose, throat, and sometimes the lungs, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention stated.
