{"id":492663,"date":"2026-01-04T21:52:15","date_gmt":"2026-01-04T21:52:15","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/492663\/"},"modified":"2026-01-04T21:52:15","modified_gmt":"2026-01-04T21:52:15","slug":"western-river-at-winton-reaches-major-flood-level-while-richmond-braces-for-stock-losses","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/492663\/","title":{"rendered":"Western River at Winton reaches major flood level while Richmond braces for stock losses"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">The Western River at Winton in outback Queensland has reached its major flood level, peaking at 4.05 metres overnight.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">Residents and travellers in low-lying streets of Winton were voluntarily evacuated to other parts of the town on Sunday as a Watch and Act warning was issued for the area.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">Winton Shire Council Mayor Cathy White said the town had an anxious few hours as the river peaked.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">&#8220;It&#8217;s receding. We are expecting some more rises sometime today, but hopefully the water that&#8217;s been here already has enough time to start flowing down and won&#8217;t get any worse,&#8221; she said.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">&#8220;I think we\u2019ve seen the worst of it.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">Winton resident Vicki Jones said the water peaked about 10pm.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">&#8220;It&#8217;s come up pretty high. (ABC News)<\/p>\n<p>Wet weather heads toward north Queensland coast<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">Sustained rainfall totals around the Burdekin prompted a Watch and Act warning to be issued for Giru and surrounds on Sunday afternoon.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">There was heavy rainfall overnight around Townsville, with Pallarenda recording 241mm and Picnic Bay on Magnetic Island recording 244mm since 9am Sunday.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">Forecasters are turning their eye to the north tropical coast, as the risk of heavy falls contracts east, with a particular focus on the area of Bowen north through to Cairns.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">&#8220;Especially during morning periods when we get those periods of local convergence, that can bring falls of 100 to 200 millimetres in a very short duration and very localised area,&#8221; Mr Hanniffy said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">&#8220;Areas across Far North Queensland, particularly coastal parts north of Ingham, still have the risk of some localised heavy falls with shower and storm activity persisting,&#8221; he said.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"Coalbrook Station near Richmond has seen significant flooding.\" class=\"Image_image__5tFYM ContentImage_image__DQ_cq\"  src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/01\/e8ac078772e8bf228e9390e51bd72be5.jpeg\" loading=\"lazy\" data-component=\"Image\" data-lazy=\"true\"\/><\/p>\n<p class=\"Typography_base__sj2RP FigureCaption_text__zDxQ5 Typography_sizeMobile12__w_FPC Typography_lineHeightMobile20___U7Vr Typography_regular__WeIG6 Typography_colourInherit__dfnUx\" data-component=\"Typography\">Coalbrook Station near Richmond has seen significant flooding.
