(ABC News: Michael Park)<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">Now, about 16 months into its term, the CLP credits its tough-on-crime approach with a recent drop in offending across the NT, reflected in the latest NT Police Force crime statistics.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">But the NT&#8217;s prison population has soared and the CLP&#8217;s punitive approach hasn&#8217;t been popular with justice advocates or youth organisations who argue the NT can&#8217;t jail its way out of a crime crisis.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">In 2025, the headlines painted a picture of <a class=\"Link_link__5eL5m ScreenReaderOnly_srLinkHint__OysWz Link_showVisited__C1Fea Link_showFocus__ALyv2\" href=\"https:\/\/www.abc.net.au\/news\/2025-09-23\/alice-springs-prison-described-as-inhumane-ahead-of-summer\/105789502\" data-component=\"Link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">overpopulated, &#8220;inhumane&#8221; cell conditions,<\/a> <a class=\"Link_link__5eL5m ScreenReaderOnly_srLinkHint__OysWz Link_showVisited__C1Fea Link_showFocus__ALyv2\" href=\"https:\/\/www.abc.net.au\/news\/2025-11-30\/nt-ombudsman-report-inhumane-oppressive-watch-house-conditions\/106082108\" data-component=\"Link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">overflowing watch houses<\/a>, legal aid services <a class=\"Link_link__5eL5m ScreenReaderOnly_srLinkHint__OysWz Link_showVisited__C1Fea Link_showFocus__ALyv2\" href=\"https:\/\/www.abc.net.au\/news\/2025-11-18\/legal-aid-nt-stops-taking-new-criminal-cases-funding-issues\/106017800\" data-component=\"Link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">struggling to meet demand<\/a> and <a class=\"Link_link__5eL5m ScreenReaderOnly_srLinkHint__OysWz Link_showVisited__C1Fea Link_showFocus__ALyv2\" href=\"https:\/\/www.abc.net.au\/news\/2025-10-23\/majority-of-nt-prison-rehab-programs-cancelled-overcrowding\/105916564\" data-component=\"Link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">rehabilitation programs being cancelled<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"Palmerston Watch house - better quality\" class=\"Image_image__5tFYM ContentImage_image__DQ_cq\"  src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/01\/f7324544f1b86aa1559b906fbd5b598a.jpeg\" loading=\"lazy\" data-component=\"Image\" data-lazy=\"true\"\/><\/p>\n<p class=\"Typography_base__sj2RP FigureCaption_text__zDxQ5 Typography_sizeMobile12__w_FPC Typography_lineHeightMobile20___U7Vr Typography_regular__WeIG6 Typography_colourInherit__dfnUx\" data-component=\"Typography\">The government says most prisoners have been removed from watch houses, with just six remaining across the territory in December. (Supplied: NT Ombudsman\u00a0)<\/p>\n<p>Alice Springs property offences, assaults down<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">Monthly data published by the NT Police Force shows property offences in Alice Springs \u2014 including theft, burglary and property damage \u2014 was 20 per cent lower than the same period a year earlier.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">At the same time, offences against the person \u2014 including assault, robbery and homicide \u2014 were down by 13 per cent compared to the same period a year earlier.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">However, the figures remained steady for some offences, including sexual assaults.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">While the NT&#8217;s prison population has been steadily increasing for the past nine years, the crime drop in Alice Springs coincides with the largest yearly increase in a decade \u2014 jumping by about 600 people between June 2024 and June 2025.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">About 88 per cent of the prison population is Indigenous, <a class=\"Link_link__5eL5m ScreenReaderOnly_srLinkHint__OysWz Link_showVisited__C1Fea Link_showFocus__ALyv2\" href=\"https:\/\/www.abc.net.au\/news\/2025-10-15\/closing-the-gap-proposed-penalties\/105894194\" data-component=\"Link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">prompting federal Indigenous Australians Minister Malarndirri McCarthy<\/a> to single out the NT for its failure to meet national targets on Closing the Gap.<\/p>\n<p>Advocates call for long-term solutions<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">On a Wednesday afternoon at the Gap Youth Centre, dozens of young people rush through the back doors towards the Hoops 4 Health basketball program, which runs two nights a week.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">It also provides free meals, programs and a safe space for young people into the night in Alice Springs, supporting the children most vulnerable to ending up in the criminal justice system.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"The sun shines over a basketball court as children play\" class=\"Image_image__5tFYM ContentImage_image__DQ_cq\"  src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/01\/68386f87c3452246e9c4d354015774b6.jpeg\" loading=\"lazy\" data-component=\"Image\" data-lazy=\"true\"\/><\/p>\n<p class=\"Typography_base__sj2RP FigureCaption_text__zDxQ5 Typography_sizeMobile12__w_FPC Typography_lineHeightMobile20___U7Vr Typography_regular__WeIG6 Typography_colourInherit__dfnUx\" data-component=\"Typography\">Children play at the Gap Youth Centre which runs an after hours drop-in program until 9:30pm every night.\u00a0 (ABC News: William Green)<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">Earlier this year, the NT government lowered the age of criminal responsibility from 12 to 10 \u2014 the age of many of the young people at the hub \u2014 and made it harder for them to access diversion programs.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"A child's foot in the foreground with other children playing in the background, out of focus\" class=\"Image_image__5tFYM ContentImage_image__DQ_cq\"  src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/01\/df86250e0e3fd52a7804bacea481d396.jpeg\" loading=\"lazy\" data-component=\"Image\" data-lazy=\"true\"\/><\/p>\n<p class=\"Typography_base__sj2RP FigureCaption_text__zDxQ5 Typography_sizeMobile12__w_FPC Typography_lineHeightMobile20___U7Vr Typography_regular__WeIG6 Typography_colourInherit__dfnUx\" data-component=\"Typography\">Programs run at the Gap Youth Centre aim to create generational change for young people.
