Rain was generally falling at a rate of 1 to 2 inches per hour, with the heaviest rainfall occurring between over Hawai\u02bbi Volcanoes National Park through P\u0101hoa, including portions of Pahoa Kalapana Road and Highway 11.<\/p>\n<p>Flooding is expected in Volcano, Glenwood, Mountain View, Wood Valley, Hawaiian Acres, P\u0101hala, Orchidland Estates, Hilo, Kea\u02bbau, P\u0101hoa, Punalu\u02bbu Black Sand Beach, Papa\u02bbikou, N\u0101\u2018\u0101lehu, and Fern Forest.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Update at 10:57 a.m. Sunday, Jan. 4, 2026:<\/strong> The National Weather Service forecast office in Honolulu has extended the flood advisory in effect for southeast portions of the Big Island until 1:45 p.m. today, as excessive rainfall continues to cause flooding.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/cdn.bigislandnow.com\/file\/bigislandnow\/2023\/02\/flood.jpg\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"806\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/01\/flood-1024x806.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-331954\"\/><\/a>The P\u0101hala drainage ditch in Ka\u02bb\u016b during a kona low in February 2023. Some low-water crossings also could become impassable.<\/p>\n<p><b>ARTICLE CONTINUES BELOW AD<\/b><\/p>\n<p><strong>Original story published at 8:10 a.m. Sunday, Jan. 4, 2026: <\/strong>National Weather Service forecasters in Honolulu issued a flood advisory for southeast portions of the Big Island until 10:45 a.m. today (Jan. 4) as excessive rainfall could produce flooding as heavy rain moves over the Puna and Ka\u02bb\u016b districts.<\/p>\n<p>National Weather Service radar indicated at 7:45 a.m. heavy rain falling at a rate of 1 to 2 inches an hour \u2014 with isolated heavier rates of up to 3 inches an hour, specifically between P\u0101hala and P\u0101hoa, including portions of P\u0101hoa-Kalapana Road and Highway 11 \u2014 was moving over portions of the Puna and Ka\u02bb\u016b coasts.<\/p>\n<p>Some locations that will experience flooding include Hilo, Hawai\u02bbi Volcanoes National Park, Volcano, Glenwood, Mountain View, Wood Valley, Hawaiian Acres, P\u0101hala, Orchidlands Estates, Kea\u02bbau, P\u0101hoa, Punalu\u02bbu Black Sand Beach, Kawa Flats, P\u0101pa\u02bbikou, N\u0101\u02bb\u0101lehu and Fern Forest.<\/p>\n<p><b>ARTICLE CONTINUES BELOW AD<\/b><\/p>\n<p>Flooding on roads and in poor drainage areas as well as streams is expected.
