{"id":493159,"date":"2026-01-05T02:57:11","date_gmt":"2026-01-05T02:57:11","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/493159\/"},"modified":"2026-01-05T02:57:11","modified_gmt":"2026-01-05T02:57:11","slug":"three-arrested-at-sydney-protest-against-us-militarys-forcible-removal-of-nicolas-maduro-from-venezuela-australian-police-and-policing","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/493159\/","title":{"rendered":"Three arrested at Sydney protest against US military\u2019s forcible removal of Nicol\u00e1s Maduro from Venezuela | Australian police and policing"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">Three people were arrested in Sydney on Sunday evening during a protest against the US military intervention in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/world\/venezuela\" data-link-name=\"in body link\" data-component=\"auto-linked-tag\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Venezuela<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">About 300 people turned out on Sydney\u2019s streets in spite of a New South Wales police prohibition on public demonstrations, made in late December using <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/australia-news\/2025\/dec\/23\/nsw-passes-controversial-new-gun-and-protest-laws-in-wake-of-bondi-attacks-after-marathon-debate-ntwnfb\" data-link-name=\"in body link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">laws passed<\/a> after 15 people were killed and scores injured in the Bondi beach alleged terror attack targeting a Hanukah event.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">The anti-protest laws give the state police commissioner power to issue a \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/commentisfree\/2025\/dec\/23\/nsw-parliament-rushing-anti-protest-laws\" data-link-name=\"in body link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">public assembly restriction declaration<\/a>\u201d after a suspected terrorist incident has been declared. It can prevent protests and marches from being \u201cauthorised\u201d by police or the courts, which can result in prosecution for protesters who obstruct people or traffic in a public place if their protest has not been formally authorised.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">Sunday\u2019s protest was one of many in Australian cities to condemn US actions in Venezuela, after news that US forces had <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/commentisfree\/2026\/jan\/04\/the-guardian-view-on-the-us-seizure-of-maduro-trump-has-turned-the-worlds-superpower-into-a-rogue-state\" data-link-name=\"in body link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">forcibly removed<\/a> Venezuelan president Nicol\u00e1s Maduro, and claims made by US president Donald Trump that the US would seize direct control of the country and its <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/us-news\/2026\/jan\/03\/us-oil-trump-venezuela\" data-link-name=\"in body link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">oil reserves<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/email-newsletters?CMP=copyembed&amp;CMP=emailbutton\" data-link-name=\"in body link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Sign up: AU Breaking News email<\/a><\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">In <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/australia-news\/sydney\" data-link-name=\"in body link\" data-component=\"auto-linked-tag\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Sydney<\/a>, protesters waved placards that read \u201cHands off Venezuela\u201d and \u201cDown with imperialism\u201d.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">There was also a small group of supporters of Venezuela\u2019s opposition who celebrated the US intervention draped in red, blue and yellow, and brandished photos of Maduro released by the US administration with the word \u201ccaptured\u201d superimposed across his image.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">NSW police said they attended an \u201cunauthorised protest\u201d at around 6pm on Sunday evening in George Street, Sydney, where 250 people were protesting, alongside about 40 counter-protesters.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">A 53-year-old woman was arrested for wearing a shirt \u201cdisplaying offensive messaging\u201d, police alleged.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">Two men, one aged 26 and one aged 34, were arrested for alleged breach of the peace.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">All three were taken to Day Street police station and released at the conclusion of the protest, police said. No charges have been laid.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">Rightwing agitator Drew Pavlou claimed on social media he was one of the men arrested, circulating footage that showed him chanting pro-US slogans amid the protesters before being frogmarched away by a large group of police.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">In <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/australia-news\/melbourne\" data-link-name=\"in body link\" data-component=\"auto-linked-tag\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Melbourne<\/a>, about 200 people packed the steps of Melbourne\u2019s Flinders Street station, yelling \u201cshame\u201d when speakers said the Venezuelan president had been \u201ckidnapped\u201d.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">They brandished banners that read \u201cRelease Maduro now! No regime change!\u201d and \u201cNo war for oil!
