A 61-year-old dual national has been granted bail over a fatal hit-and-run in Darwin, with the court giving him the green light to travel to Thailand this week.<\/p>\n

Long-term Darwin resident and Thai-Australian man Pairat Junsomran appeared at Darwin Local Court on Monday, where he broke down in tears as his bail application was heard before Judge John Bortoli.<\/p>\n

A 27-year-old Indigenous woman was struck by a car allegedly being driven by Mr Junsomran on Darwin’s Bagot Road on December 27.<\/p>\n

She died at the scene before emergency services arrived.<\/p>\n

Following what police described as an extensive investigation into the incident, Mr Junsomran was arrested and charged with one count of hit-run causing death seven days after the crash.<\/p>\n

Mr Junsomran’s lawyer Samuel Naylor said his client had no criminal record and “very strong ties” to the Darwin community, with a family home in the city’s northern suburbs.<\/p>\n

“He does not present, really, a risk of re-offending or of flight,” Mr Naylor said.<\/p>\n

“The other thing I would mention is \u2026 his co-operation with police in this investigation, including voluntarily driving the vehicle to the station to undergo forensic testing.<\/p>\n

“There’s been some quite extensive cooperation.”<\/p>\n

Mr Junsomran’s family members, including some of his children, were in court for the bail hearing.<\/p>\n

Mr Naylor acknowledged the charge against his client was”very serious” with a 10-year prison sentence maximum penalty attached.<\/p>\n

Pre-arranged trip to Thailand allowed to proceed<\/p>\n

The court heard Mr Junsomran had a pre-arranged trip to Thailand booked, scheduled to leave Darwin on January 6.<\/p>\n

“To reiterate, it is a trip that has been completely independently organised prior to the supervening events between Christmas and New Years,” Mr Naylor said.<\/p>\n

“I’ve had a conversation with the family and with Mr Junsomran, to the effect that obviously these charges radically change the position of his personal circumstances.<\/p>\n

“I informed [them] I’d put that before the court before consideration.”<\/p>\n

Prosecution lawyer Bryce Luck did not oppose bail or argue against Mr Junsomran being allowed to travel to Thailand.<\/p>\n

“Noting his ties to the [Darwin] community, we don’t see him as a flight risk,”<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

he said.<\/p>\n

Judge Bortoli agreed to bail Mr Junsomran with a number of conditions, including that he surrender his passport following his return to Australia on February 7.<\/p>\n

He was also ordered to remain in the Northern Territory after his return from Thailand.<\/p>\n
