{"id":494280,"date":"2026-01-05T14:45:18","date_gmt":"2026-01-05T14:45:18","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/494280\/"},"modified":"2026-01-05T14:45:18","modified_gmt":"2026-01-05T14:45:18","slug":"industrial-port-informs-metal-exterior-of-henville-street-house","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/494280\/","title":{"rendered":"Industrial port informs metal exterior of Henville Street House"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The Fremantle cargo port informed the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dezeen.com\/tag\/corrugated-metal\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">corrugated metal<\/a> cladding and steel-framed awnings of Henville Street House, a family <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dezeen.com\/tag\/houses\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">home<\/a> in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dezeen.com\/tag\/perth\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Perth<\/a>, Australia, by local studio Philip Stejskal Architecture.<\/p>\n<p>Located on a compact urban site, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.architectureps.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Philip Stejskal Architecture<\/a> designed the home to have a close relationship to its garden while avoiding overlooking.<\/p>\n<p>It is organised around a patio and has a skeletal steel frame that will gradually be overgrown by climbing plants.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-2283704 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/01\/henville-house-perth-philip-stejskal_dezeen_2364_col_1-852x1280.jpg\" alt=\"Henville Street House exterior\" width=\"1573\" height=\"2364\"  \/>Philip Stejskal Architecture has completed a family home in Perth<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;It\u2019s a simple project constrained by budget and a challenging site,&#8221; studio founder Philip Stejskal told Dezeen.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;The design consists of a literal box clad in corrugated iron, harking back to the original workers cottages of the area,&#8221; he continued.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;This is able to withstand the harsh coastal environment, does not require maintenance and provides a cost-effective solution.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-2283728 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/01\/henville-house-perth-philip-stejskal_dezeen_2364_col_25-852x1280.jpg\" alt=\"Garden area at family home by Philip Stejskal Architecture\" width=\"1573\" height=\"2364\"  \/>Corrugated metal and steel-framed awnings reference a nearby cargo port<\/p>\n<p>With a one-metre level change from the north to south of the site, the home was positioned so that its sunken living, dining and kitchen spaces step up into the garden. Here, a large sill doubles as a seating area alongside large sliding glass doors.<\/p>\n<p>Passing through this threshold, Henville Street House opens out onto a patio that Stejskal calls an &#8220;outdoor room&#8221;, sheltered by a double-height steel frame.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-2283730 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/01\/henville-house-perth-philip-stejskal_dezeen_2364_col_27-852x567.jpg\" alt=\"View towards living space interior of Henville Street House in Australia\" width=\"2364\" height=\"1573\"  \/>A sunken living, dining and kitchen area steps up to the garden<\/p>\n<p>The upper section of this frame has been clad in metal grilles that will gradually be overgrown by climbing plants, with the same grilles used to create a low fence around the home.<\/p>\n<p>Shaded by a retractable awning, this steel frame also incorporates a terrace for the three bedrooms on the first floor, and wraps around to the front of the home, where it forms a small awning above the entrance and garage.<\/p>\n<p>\t\t\t\t<a href=\"https:\/\/www.dezeen.com\/2025\/12\/03\/nick-kent-design-bondi-house\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><br \/>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<img loading=\"lazy\" width=\"191\" height=\"191\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/01\/bondi-house-nick-kent-architecture-residential-sydney-australia_dezeen_2364_sq-191x191.jpg\" class=\"excludeLightbox wp-post-image\" alt=\"Bondi House by Nick Kent\" decoding=\"async\" data-pin-nopin=\"true\"  \/><\/p>\n<p> Nick Kent Design designs Bondi House as steel-framed &#8220;kit of parts&#8221;\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/p>\n<p>\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/a><\/p>\n<p>&#8220;The outdoor room is enveloped in a vertical trellis that will green over time, and roofed by a retractable fabric awning,&#8221; explained Stejskal.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;In winter, the deciduous green wall opens up to embrace the sun, whilst in summer it offers protection and gives the owners another room for outdoor living and dining,&#8221; he added.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-2283711 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/01\/henville-house-perth-philip-stejskal_dezeen_2364_col_8-852x567.jpg\" alt=\"Interior view of Henville Street House by Philip Stejskal Architecture\" width=\"2364\" height=\"1573\"  \/>The interior is lined with dark Australian hardwoods<\/p>\n<p>Inside Henville Street House, the industrial-style metalwork of the exterior is contrasted by pale curtains and dark Australian hardwoods used for built-in storage and wall linings.<\/p>\n<p>Facing the garden, the internal facades are clad in narrow, vertical battens, which have also been used at the base of a window at the front of the home.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-2283722 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/01\/henville-house-perth-philip-stejskal_dezeen_2364_col_19-852x1193.jpg\" alt=\"Bedroom interior at home in Perth by Philip Stejskal Architecture\" width=\"1688\" height=\"2364\"  \/>Pale curtains cloak full-height windows<\/p>\n<p>Elsewhere in Australia, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dezeen.com\/2025\/09\/19\/hedge-and-arbour-house-studio-bright-melbourne\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Studio Bright created a blockwork home in Melbourne that is wrapped by metal mesh screens<\/a>, which will gradually be covered with climbing plants to form a leafy arbour shading its interiors.<\/p>\n<p>Other Australian houses recently featured on Dezeen include Bondi House, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dezeen.com\/2025\/12\/03\/nick-kent-design-bondi-house\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">a steel-framed &#8220;kit of parts&#8221;
