In October 2018, the American Pie star announced he was one year sober in a celebratory and encouraging\u00a0Instagram<\/a> post.<\/p>\n

\u201cI first tried to get sober over 5 years ago, when the weight of my obsession with booze and drugs became too heavy for me to handle,\u201d he wrote at the time. \u201cTurns out this s–t is hard.\u201d<\/p>\n

He continued, \u201cAfter some fits and starts, I\u2019ve managed to put together one year of sobriety. I\u2019m as proud of it as anything in my life. If you\u2019re struggling, know there\u2019s help. Don\u2019t be ashamed. We can do this.\u201d<\/p>\n

Years later, he reflected on his journey with addiction and the lengths he went to hide the his struggle.<\/p>\n

\u201cI\u2019m going to therapy and \u2018working on things\u2019 but meanwhile I\u2019m leaving therapy, having just had a good session, and I\u2019m going to the liquor store and buying a fifth of vodka, drinking it and then driving home,\u201d he said on a March 2024 episode of his wife\u00a0Jenny Mollen<\/strong>‘s All the Fails<\/a> podcast. \u201cI knew how to get wasted enough to where I took myself out of the life equation, took myself out of the present, didn\u2019t have to connect in a way that made me feel things.\u201d<\/p>\n

He added, \u201cI had it figured out to a T. To not get too drunk where I couldn\u2019t have a conversation with you. I was replacing those bottles in the bar all the time.\u201d<\/p>\n
