They included dry periods and parched forests and bushland, worsening fire weather, the potential for strong wind gusts, steep slopes and large tracts of bush adjacent to homes.

Parts of Sydney, like the Northern Beaches, Penrith and the Blue Mountains, were a “ticking timebomb”, he said, with massive fuel loads built up after years of rain.

In Melbourne, numerous suburbs bordered grasslands where fires could move quickly and be difficult to control. Other capitals faced similar risks.

Smoke haze smothers Sydney skyline as bushfire season begins – video

Nelli Stevenson lives on the western fringe of Melbourne, not far from about 230 square kilometres of “tinder-dry grassland and farmland”.

Stevenson said she worried about the risk of bushfire, particularly the associated smoke, given her four-year-old son was particularly prone to respiratory infections.

“That’s something that’s been playing on my mind ever since I had children,” she said.

“When you think about people at risk of bushfires, you’re usually thinking about people in the bush,” she said. “I technically live in Melbourne, and we’re still at risk.”

This summer’s outlook identified elevated risk in western and southern Western Australia, central northern New South Wales, and southern part of Victoria, with long term rainfall deficits across southern states.

A rare sudden stratospheric warming event had also led to hotter and drier conditions than expected, Mullins said.

It was critical to “turn down the heat”, he said, with stronger action to cut fossil fuel emissions.

The report called for greater investment in disaster preparedness, and increased capacity for emergency services and land managers at the urban fringe.

Mullins added that greater investment was needed to retrofit houses and infrastructure, to bring those most at risk up to modern bushfire standards.

“I know it’ll scare people,” he said. “But I hope they get past that, and [say] we have to take action.”

Many Australian cities share common traits that made the deadly 2025 Los Angeles fires so destructive, according to…

[2
4740,50
0":"post-494754","1":"post","2":"type-post","3":"status-publish","4":"format-standard","5":"has-post-thumbnail","7":"category-news","8":"tag-australia","9":"tag-news
["GET
