The planned move to Plano marks a big loss for the city. AT&amp;T is one of the world\u2019s largest telecommunications companies and one of the city\u2019s largest employers. <\/p>\n<p class=\"body-text-paragraph\">Here is what we know about this developing story:<\/p>\n<p>AT&amp;T\u2019s new Plano site<\/p>\n<p class=\"body-text-paragraph\">The company\u2019s new global headquarters is set to be located at 5400 Legacy Dr. in Plano, Texas. The site also includes the former base for Electronic Data Systems headquarters, H. Ross Perot Sr.\u2019s information technology company, which was founded in the 1960s.<\/p>\n<p class=\"body-text-paragraph\">NexPoint declined to comment when reached by a reporter from The News.<\/p>\n<p>When will the Plano HQ open?<\/p>\n<p class=\"body-text-paragraph\">An exact opening date of the HQ is still not known. but Stankey told employees that the company is targeting partial occupancy for the new headquarters \u201cas early as the second half of 2028.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The future of the Discovery District<\/p>\n<p class=\"body-text-paragraph\">One key thing was missing in AT&amp;T\u2019s statement regarding its new Plano headquarters \u2014 the fate of the Discovery District in Downtown Dallas. <\/p>\n<p class=\"body-text-paragraph\">In 2022, AT&amp;T had nearly 6,000 workers assigned to its downtown offices and its lease at the 37-story Whitacre Tower doesn\u2019t expire until 2030. The Dallas Economic Development Corp. estimates AT&amp;T has nearly 10,700 employees in the city of Dallas.<\/p>\n<p class=\"body-text-paragraph\">The Discovery District, opened in 2021, includes a massive video screen, a food hall, outdoor seating space and more.<\/p>\n<p>How will AT&amp;T\u2019s relocation affect Dallas?<\/p>\n<p class=\"body-text-paragraph\">AT&amp;T\u2019s relocation from Downtown Dallas could plunge property values by 30%, costing the area an estimated $2.7 billion in overall value, according to Downtown Dallas Inc., The News reported.<\/p>\n<p>What Leaders Are Saying <\/p>\n<p class=\"body-text-paragraph\">Plano leaders <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dallasnews.com\/business\/2026\/01\/05\/plano-leaders-herald-major-win-in-att-headquarter-relocation\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.dallasnews.com\/business\/2026\/01\/05\/plano-leaders-herald-major-win-in-att-headquarter-relocation\/\">heralded AT&amp;T\u2019s relocation as a \u201cmajor win\u201d<\/a> for the city. <\/p>\n<p class=\"body-text-paragraph\">\u201cThis is not something new,\u201d Plano council member Rick Horne said, adding, \u201cPlano has had some great success with Toyota [North America] moving here, Liberty Mutual, Capital One, Boeing \u2026 Frito-Lay, PepsiCo, all those have come here for a reason.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"body-text-paragraph\">Ray Perryman, president and CEO of The Perryman Group, an economic research and analysis firm in Waco, declared that Plano is leading a \u201cnew renaissance\u201d given the city\u2019s success in attracting major employers. <\/p>\n<p class=\"body-text-paragraph\">City of Dallas leaders, however, were blunt about the decision.
