Security Council to voice opposition to the <a class=\"Link AnClick-LinkEnhancement\" data-gtm-enhancement-style=\"LinkEnhancementA\" href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/venezuela-us-explosions-caracas-ca712a67aaefc30b1831f5bf0b50665e\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">audacious U.S. military operation<\/a> in Venezuela that captured <a class=\"Link AnClick-LinkEnhancement\" data-gtm-enhancement-style=\"LinkEnhancementA\" href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/venezuela-maduro-capture-trump-attack-military-ceb21da088f0a06b1813e66922def9a3\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">leader Nicol\u00e1s Maduro<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Before the U.N.&#8217;s most powerful body, countries critiqued \u2014 if sometimes obliquely \u2014 President Donald Trump\u2019s intervention in the South American country and his recent comments signaling the <a class=\"Link AnClick-LinkEnhancement\" data-gtm-enhancement-style=\"LinkEnhancementA\" href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/trump-venezuela-greenland-cuba-571aac35e259857fd512c46f5af11e4d\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">possibility of expanding military action<\/a> to countries like Colombia and Mexico over drug trafficking accusations. The Republican president also has reupped his threat to take over the <a class=\"Link AnClick-LinkEnhancement\" data-gtm-enhancement-style=\"LinkEnhancementA\" href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/denmark-nato-trump-russia-china-greenland-907b309f213322a437771521fce5a08c\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Danish territory of Greenland<\/a> for the sake of U.S. security interests. <\/p>\n<p>Denmark, which has jurisdiction over the mineral-rich island, carefully denounced U.S. prospects for taking over Greenland without mentioning its NATO ally by name. <\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe inviolability of borders is not up for negotiation,\u201d said Christina Markus Lassen, Danish ambassador to the U.N. <\/p>\n<p>She also defended Venezuela\u2019s sovereignty, saying \u201cno state should seek to influence political outcomes in Venezuela through the use of threat of force or through other means inconsistent with international law.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>US allies push back on Venezuela<\/p>\n<p>While French President Emmanuel Macron recently endorsed Maduro\u2019s capture, its U.N. envoy was slightly more critical Monday, saying any violations of international law by the five permanent members of the U.N. Security Council, which include the U.S., erodes \u201cthe very foundation of the international order.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe military operation that has led to the capture of Maduro runs counter to the principle of peace dispute resolution and runs counter to the principle of non-use of force,\u201d said Jay Dharmadhikari, deputy French ambassador to the U.N.<\/p>\n<p>U.S. envoy Mike Waltz defended the operation in Venezuela as a justified and \u201csurgical law enforcement operation,\u201d calling out the 15-member council for criticizing the targeting of Maduro.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIf the United Nations in this body confers legitimacy on an illegitimate narco-terrorist with the same treatment in this charter of a democratically elected president or head of state, what kind of organization is this?\u201d said Waltz, who is Trump\u2019s former national security adviser. <\/p>\n<p>Maduro\u2019s 2024 reelection was <a class=\"Link AnClick-LinkEnhancement\" data-gtm-enhancement-style=\"LinkEnhancementA\" href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/venezuela-election-tally-sheets-actas-oas-carter-center-41d1000926d0ab99e522e53bf6c2b916\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">widely disputed<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>U.N. Secretary-General Antonio Guterres said in a statement that he is \u201cdeeply concerned that rules of international law have not been respected with regard to the 3 January military action.\u201d He said the \u201cgrave\u201d action by the U.S. could set a precedent for how future relations between nations unfold.<\/p>\n<p>Venezuela calls on the UN to take action<\/p>\n<p>Even with the strong support for Venezuela\u2019s sovereignty, its envoy called on the U.N. to go beyond veiled comments and condemnation. Ambassador Samuel Moncada urged the Security Council to demand that Washington release Maduro and his wife.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIf the kidnapping of a head of state, the bombing of a sovereign country and the open threat of further armed action are tolerated or downplayed, the message sent to the world is a devastating one: namely that the law is optional, and that force is the true arbiter of international relations,\u201d Moncada said.<\/p>\n<p>He warned that other countries can\u2019t afford to look away: \u201cAccepting such a logic would mean to open the door to a deeply unstable world.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Neighboring Colombia described the raid as reminiscent of \u201cthe worst interference in our area in the past.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDemocracy cannot be defended or promoted through violence and coercion, and it cannot be superseded, either, by economic interests,\u201d Ambassador Leonor Zalabata said. <\/p>\n<p>China and Russia are expectedly critical<\/p>\n<p>The biggest critics of U.S. foreign policy, China and Russia, which are also permanent members of the Security Council, called for the U.N. body to unite in rejecting America turning back to an \u201cera of lawlessness.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Maduro, like his predecessor, <a class=\"Link AnClick-LinkEnhancement\" data-gtm-enhancement-style=\"LinkEnhancementA\" href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/maduro-russia-putin-trump-tanker-venezuela-786d7fcafb089d7c3ae12c5c6c50a8fe\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">forged a close relationship with Russia<\/a>, while China was the <a class=\"Link AnClick-LinkEnhancement\" data-gtm-enhancement-style=\"LinkEnhancementA\" href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/venezuela-oil-tankers-maduro-trump-blockade-2460e98e4c504cd2a1c86b951e825013\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">main destination for most Venezuelan oil<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe cannot allow the United States to proclaim itself as some kind of a supreme judge, which alone bears the right to invade any country, to label culprits, to hand down and to enforce punishments irrespective of notions of international law, sovereignty and nonintervention,\u201d Russian ambassador Vassily Nebenzia said. <\/p>\n<p>His own country\u2019s <a class=\"Link AnClick-LinkEnhancement\" data-gtm-enhancement-style=\"LinkEnhancementA\" href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/russia-ukraine-europe-russia-moscow-kyiv-626a8c5ec22217bacb24ece60fac4fe1\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">2022 invasion of Ukraine<\/a> has drawn widespread <a class=\"Link AnClick-LinkEnhancement\" data-gtm-enhancement-style=\"LinkEnhancementA\" href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/un-russia-ukraine-war-resolution-trump-zelenskyy-cde221e5850196776525403e788c272c\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">condemnation within the U.N.<\/a> and from the U.S., although the Trump administration is engaging with Russia in hopes of brokering an end to the fighting.<\/p>\n<p>The U.S. seized <a class=\"Link AnClick-LinkEnhancement\" data-gtm-enhancement-style=\"LinkEnhancementA\" href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/venezuela-maduro-capture-trump-attack-military-ceb21da088f0a06b1813e66922def9a3\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Maduro and his wife<\/a> early Saturday from their home on a military base and put them aboard a U.S. warship to face prosecution in New York in a Justice Department indictment accusing them of participating in a narco-terrorism conspiracy. Maduro declared his innocence during his <a class=\"Link AnClick-LinkEnhancement\" data-gtm-enhancement-style=\"LinkEnhancementA\" href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/maduro-venezuela-trump-criminal-case-131f59e517cc8314a53c8dace230d328\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">first appearance in a Manhattan courthouse<\/a> Monday. <\/p>\n<p>His stunning removal came after months of the U.S. amassing a military presence off Venezuela\u2019s coast and <a class=\"Link AnClick-LinkEnhancement\" data-gtm-enhancement-style=\"LinkEnhancementA\" href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/trump-maduro-venezuela-drug-cartels-military-timeline-91e242e5c56eec39b6b7d72bf55dbd2d\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">blowing up alleged drug trafficking boats<\/a>.
