{"id":49573,"date":"2025-07-08T20:19:09","date_gmt":"2025-07-08T20:19:09","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/49573\/"},"modified":"2025-07-08T20:19:09","modified_gmt":"2025-07-08T20:19:09","slug":"prime-day-could-be-quite-a-test-for-tariff-rattled-consumers","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/49573\/","title":{"rendered":"Prime Day Could Be \u2018Quite a Test\u2019 for Tariff-Rattled Consumers"},"content":{"rendered":"<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.amazon.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Amazon<\/a>\u00a0kicked off its annual summer sale on Tuesday (July 8), but as Bloomberg News\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.bloomberg.com\/news\/articles\/2025-07-08\/amazon-sellers-curb-prime-day-discounts-with-tariffs-taking-bite?srnd=homepage-americas\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">reported<\/a>, the trade war has caused some consumers \u2014 and some brands \u2014 to stay away.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The report notes that the 10-year-old event, which stretches over four days this year, could offer a glimpse into consumer spending and buying habits at a time of mixed signals on the health of the American economy.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cPrime Day will provide an early indication on consumer appetite, especially in categories like apparel, electronics and TVs, where price drops are expected to be the deepest,\u201d said\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.linkedin.com\/in\/vivekmpandya\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Vivek Pandya<\/a>, lead analyst at\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.adobe.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Adobe<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">That company has forecast that Amazon and other American retailers will realize $23.8 billion in online sales from Prime Day.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">As the report notes, consumption dipped somewhat in May, while\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.pymnts.com\/consumer-insights\/2025\/consumers-feel-happier-still-worry-about-inflation\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">consumer sentiment rose<\/a>\u00a0in June. Prime Day could help provide a better glimpse of consumer spending for the remainder of the summer.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cPrime Day will be quite a test,\u201d\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/fr.linkedin.com\/in\/romain-fouache\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Romain Fouache<\/a>, CEO of\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.akeneo.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Akeneo<\/a>, seller of software used by eCommerce businesses, told Bloomberg.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A survey by that company showed that of the 1,000 U.S. shoppers polled, 25% planned to skip Prime Day because of tariffs, while 57% said they would pay closer attention to prices.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">But this hesitancy doesn\u2019t just stop with consumers, the Bloomberg report added. Some online sellers, who account for\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.pymnts.com\/amazon\/2023\/amazon-independent-sellers-make-up-60percent-of-ecommerce-sales\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">60% of the products<\/a>\u00a0sold on Amazon\u2019s site, say they can\u2019t afford to offer discounts this year because they need to boost prices to alleviate the costs from tariffs.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Consumer optimism about the impact of the tariffs varies greatly depending on what they value in their purchases, according to the report PYMNTS Intelligence\u00a0\u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.pymnts.com\/study_posts\/shoppers-pull-back-as-half-of-us-consumers-expect-tariffs-to-raise-prices-at-double-the-rate-of-inflation\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Consumer Tariff Sentiment: Informed Americans Are Skeptical of the Benefits<\/a>.\u201d<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">When offered the choice between low-priced or\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.pymnts.com\/consumer-insights\/2025\/made-in-america-ideal-tested-by-rising-import-costs\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">American-made products<\/a>, 39% of shoppers always or mostly value affordability, a feature associated with goods imported from low-cost China.
