The conversation sparked a debate over whether students should be allowed to have access to their phone at all during the school day.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dist__Box-sc-1fnzlkn-0 dist__TextBase-sc-1fnzlkn-3 bYFsJw cuqaEv article-text\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ksat.com\/news\/local\/2025\/12\/10\/tea-notifies-neisd-it-needs-to-change-its-cellphone-policy\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.ksat.com\/news\/local\/2025\/12\/10\/tea-notifies-neisd-it-needs-to-change-its-cellphone-policy\/\">North East Independent School District was at the center of this controversy<\/a> at the end of 2025 as a complaint to the Texas Education Agency highlighted NEISD\u2019s policy as being noncompliant with state law. <\/p>\n<p class=\"dist__Box-sc-1fnzlkn-0 dist__TextBase-sc-1fnzlkn-3 bYFsJw cuqaEv article-text\">The district was allowing students to use their phones during passing periods and during lunch, an option that NEISD student Aaron Matson enjoyed.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dist__Box-sc-1fnzlkn-0 dist__TextBase-sc-1fnzlkn-3 bYFsJw cuqaEv article-text\">\u201cDuring passing periods you can check your grades in the classes,\u201d Matson said. \u201cI felt it was very useful to use it during passing periods because if I had an issue, if I needed to receive allergy medication \u2014 because I\u2019m very prone to allergies \u2014 I could just text my mom and then she could bring it over during the passing period.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"dist__Box-sc-1fnzlkn-0 dist__TextBase-sc-1fnzlkn-3 bYFsJw cuqaEv article-text\">NEISD will have to adjust their phone policy by sending a new plan to the state by Jan. 9, according to the TEA.
