{"id":496488,"date":"2026-01-06T12:45:09","date_gmt":"2026-01-06T12:45:09","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/496488\/"},"modified":"2026-01-06T12:45:09","modified_gmt":"2026-01-06T12:45:09","slug":"us-based-multinational-companies-will-be-exempt-from-global-tax-deal","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/496488\/","title":{"rendered":"US-based multinational companies will be exempt from global tax deal"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"EkqkG IGXmU nlgHS yuUao MvWXB TjIXL aGjvy ebVHC \">WASHINGTON &#8212; U.S. multinational corporations will be exempted from paying more corporate taxes overseas in a deal finalized by the <a class=\"zZygg UbGlr iFzkS qdXbA WCDhQ DbOXS tqUtK GpWVU iJYzE \" data-testid=\"prism-linkbase\" href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/hub\/organization-for-economic-co-operation-and-development\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development<\/a>. <\/p>\n<p class=\"EkqkG IGXmU nlgHS yuUao lqtkC TjIXL aGjvy \">The OECD announced Monday that nearly 150 countries have agreed on the plan, initially crafted in 2021, to stop large global companies from shifting profits to low-tax countries, no matter where they operate in the world. <\/p>\n<p class=\"EkqkG IGXmU nlgHS yuUao lqtkC TjIXL aGjvy \">The amended version excludes large U.S.-based multinational corporations from the 15% global minimum tax after negotiations between President Donald Trump&#8217;s administration and other members of the Group of Seven wealthy nations. <\/p>\n<p class=\"EkqkG IGXmU nlgHS yuUao lqtkC TjIXL aGjvy \">OECD Secretary-General Mathias Cormann said in a statement that the agreement is a \u201clandmark decision in international tax co-operation&#8221; and \u201cenhances tax certainty, reduces complexity, and protects tax bases.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"EkqkG IGXmU nlgHS yuUao lqtkC TjIXL aGjvy \">U.S. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent called the agreement \u201ca historic victory in preserving U.S. sovereignty and protecting American workers and businesses from extraterritorial overreach.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"EkqkG IGXmU nlgHS yuUao lqtkC TjIXL aGjvy \">The most recent version of the deal waters down a landmark 2021 agreement that set a minimum global corporate tax of 15%. The idea was to stop multinational corporations, including Apple and Nike, from using accounting and legal maneuvers to shift earnings to low- or no-tax havens.<\/p>\n<p class=\"EkqkG IGXmU nlgHS yuUao lqtkC TjIXL aGjvy \">Those havens are typically places like Bermuda and the Cayman Islands, where the companies actually do little or no business. <\/p>\n<p class=\"EkqkG IGXmU nlgHS yuUao lqtkC TjIXL aGjvy \">Former Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen was <a class=\"zZygg UbGlr iFzkS qdXbA WCDhQ DbOXS tqUtK GpWVU iJYzE \" data-testid=\"prism-linkbase\" href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/russia-ukraine-biden-poland-2577a450b3cb18f325d61e9920e2593d\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">a key driver<\/a> of the 2021 OECD global tax deal and made the <a class=\"zZygg UbGlr iFzkS qdXbA WCDhQ DbOXS tqUtK GpWVU iJYzE \" data-testid=\"prism-linkbase\" href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/joe-biden-g-20-summit-technology-business-economy-d48ac5ea72bb6215e42d570785a7f930\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">corporate minimum tax<\/a> one of her top priorities. The plan was widely panned by congressional Republicans who said it would make the U.S. less competitive in a global economy. <\/p>\n<p class=\"EkqkG IGXmU nlgHS yuUao lqtkC TjIXL aGjvy \">The <a class=\"zZygg UbGlr iFzkS qdXbA WCDhQ DbOXS tqUtK GpWVU iJYzE \" data-testid=\"prism-linkbase\" href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/trump-taxes-investment-section-899-f343d4418707335d8db844c9242751a9\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Trump administration<\/a> in June re-negotiated the deal when congressional Republicans rolled back a <a class=\"zZygg UbGlr iFzkS qdXbA WCDhQ DbOXS tqUtK GpWVU iJYzE \" data-testid=\"prism-linkbase\" href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/trump-revenge-tax-section-899-foreign-companies-e3b3718a46081413426ed743c97539ab\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">so-called revenge tax provision<\/a> from <a class=\"zZygg UbGlr iFzkS qdXbA WCDhQ DbOXS tqUtK GpWVU iJYzE \" data-testid=\"prism-linkbase\" href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/trump-tax-cuts-bill-republicans-medicaid-snap-5106fb5d07a5675e01644aabde1f7df8\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Trump\u2019s big tax and spending bill<\/a> that would have allowed the federal government to impose taxes on companies with foreign owners, as well as on investors from countries judged as charging \u201cunfair foreign taxes\u201d on U.S. companies.<\/p>\n<p class=\"EkqkG IGXmU nlgHS yuUao lqtkC TjIXL aGjvy \">Tax transparency groups have criticized the amended OECD plan. <\/p>\n<p class=\"EkqkG IGXmU nlgHS yuUao lqtkC TjIXL aGjvy \">\u201cThis deal risks nearly a decade of global progress on corporate taxation only to allow the largest, most profitable American companies to keep parking profits in tax havens,\u201d said Zorka Milin, policy director at the FACT Coalition, a tax transparency nonprofit. <\/p>\n<p class=\"EkqkG IGXmU nlgHS yuUao lqtkC TjIXL aGjvy \">Tax watchdogs argue the minimum tax is supposed to halt an international race to the bottom for corporate taxation that has led multinational businesses to book their profits in countries with low tax rates.<\/p>\n<p class=\"EkqkG IGXmU nlgHS yuUao lqtkC eTIW sUzSN \">Congressional Republicans applauded the finalized deal.
