Analysis: San Diego\u2019s population is growing faster than other CA metros \u2014 thanks to the city<\/a><\/p>\n

The popular idea in San Diego these days is that we\u2019re not growing \u2013 and if we are, it\u2019s probably out in sprawly areas in the North and East County.<\/p>\n

But\u00a0new data from state demographers<\/a>\u00a0reveal the opposite is true. In the last three years, San Diego has added more population than any other county in the state except Riverside \u2013 and the vast majority of that growth has taken place in the city of San Diego.<\/p>\n

First, a little context: After 170 years of unrelenting population growth, California \u2013 and San Diego \u2013 saw the first-ever decline in population during the pandemic. But starting in 2022, California\u2019s population began to go up again. The increase hasn\u2019t been big \u2013 about 100,000 persons per year, compared to historic growth of 400,000 to 500,000 per year \u2013 and some of it may well have been driven by Biden-era migrants. (We\u2019ll have to wait for next year\u2019s estimates to see how big a factor this is.) Statewide, population growth didn\u2019t go up nearly as much in 2024 as it did in 2022 and 2023.<\/p>\n
