Confidential and frequented by Neil Young has been destroyed in a Jan. 4 structure fire<\/li>\n<li>The Los Angeles Fire Department responded to flames engulfing the 120-year-old Craftsman-style home within the Hollywood Center Motel on Sunday morning<\/li>\n<li>Efforts to save the building were ongoing as L.A.\u2019s Cultural Heritage Commission voted to take the property under consideration as a potential landmark last month<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p id=\"mntl-sc-block_2-0\" class=\"comp mntl-sc-block mntl-sc-block-html\"> Despite ongoing efforts to save a historic Hollywood motel, a large structure fire ultimately destroyed the building in the early morning of Sunday, Jan. 4.\n<\/p>\n<p id=\"mntl-sc-block_4-0\" class=\"comp mntl-sc-block mntl-sc-block-html\"> According to a Sunday <a href=\"https:\/\/lafd.org\/news\/hollywood-structure-fire-consumes-2-story-boardedup-craftsman-house\" data-component=\"link\" data-source=\"inlineLink\" data-type=\"externalLink\" data-ordinal=\"1\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">press release<\/a> from the Los Angeles Fire Department (LAFD), authorities responded to a reported fire at a business along Sunset Boulevard at 4:30 a.m. When firefighters arrived, they found a boarded-up, two-story Craftsman-style house engulfed in heavy flames.\u00a0\n<\/p>\n<p id=\"mntl-sc-block_6-0\" class=\"comp mntl-sc-block mntl-sc-block-html\"> The building, dating back to 1905, acted as the centerpiece of the historic Hollywood Center Motel property. Its connection to Hollywood runs deep: The home appeared in films like <a href=\"https:\/\/people.com\/kevin-spacey-responds-video-guy-pearce-claimed-targeted-11681921\" data-component=\"link\" data-source=\"inlineLink\" data-type=\"internalLink\" data-ordinal=\"1\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">L.A. Confidential<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/people.com\/tv\/stuart-margolin-dead-emmy-winning-rockford-files\/\" data-component=\"link\" data-source=\"inlineLink\" data-type=\"internalLink\" data-ordinal=\"2\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">The Rockford Files<\/a>. No injuries were reported to any fire department personnel, but one 42-year-old male who freed himself out of the second story was treated for a minor wound and transported to the hospital in stable condition.\u00a0\n<\/p>\n<p id=\"mntl-sc-block_15-0\" class=\"comp mntl-sc-block mntl-sc-block-html\"> After the fire, the LAFD exercised its right to demolish the building based on public safety issues and its uninhabitable nature. Despite the building\u2019s poor condition, local advocacy groups are mourning the loss.\u00a0\n<\/p>\n<p> Firefighters respond to a structure fire at the Hollywood Center Motel in L.A. on Jan. 4.<\/p>\n<p>LAFD\/YouTube<\/p>\n<p id=\"mntl-sc-block_18-0\" class=\"comp mntl-sc-block mntl-sc-block-html\"> \u201cIt\u2019s a gut punch for Hollywood preservation,\u201d Brian Curran, a local historian who submitted an application for the house to be designated a historic-cultural monument, tells the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.latimes.com\/california\/story\/2026-01-05\/hollywood-motel-where-rock-icons-stayed-burns-down\" data-component=\"link\" data-source=\"inlineLink\" data-type=\"externalLink\" data-ordinal=\"1\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Los Angeles Times<\/a>.\n<\/p>\n<p id=\"mntl-sc-block_20-0\" class=\"comp mntl-sc-block mntl-sc-block-html\"> Last month, L.A.\u2019s Cultural Heritage Commission voted to take the property under consideration as a potential landmark and the commissioners were scheduled to do a site visit this week. But now, it is too late.\u00a0\n<\/p>\n<p id=\"mntl-sc-block_24-0\" class=\"comp mntl-sc-block mntl-sc-block-html\"> \u201cThe real tragedy is that this building had been left vacant and it no longer had any kind of purpose, so it became a magnet for transients,\u201d Curran said. \u201cIf you go look at it now, it is essentially a pile of crushed wood that has been sprayed with fire retardant.\u201d\n<\/p>\n<p id=\"mntl-sc-block_26-0\" class=\"comp mntl-sc-block mntl-sc-block-html\"> According to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sfgate.com\/travel\/article\/121-year-old-motel-burns-hollywood-fire-21278132.php\" data-component=\"link\" data-source=\"inlineLink\" data-type=\"externalLink\" data-ordinal=\"1\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">SF Gate<\/a>, the 120-year-old building was first constructed before Hollywood was incorporated into the city of Los Angeles. Eventually, the property added additional buildings and converted to the Hollywood Center Motel in the 1950s.<\/p>\n<p>Curran tells the Times the motel continued to operate until 2018.
