LAWRENCE RIVER, New York (WWNY) &#8211; There\u2019s a word of warning for people who fish or snowmobile on the St. Lawrence River: stay off the ice.<\/p>\n<p class=\"text | article-text\">Ice-clearing activities are underway on the river, including the areas above, below, and between Eisenhower and Snell Locks, in preparation for the closing of the seaway\u2019s navigation season.<\/p>\n<p class=\"text | article-text\">People who ice fish or ride snowmobiles and ATVs are warned to stay off the river because the ice can become unstable. <\/p>\n<p class=\"text | article-text\">People are also prohibited from using the canal in the area between the Eisenhower and Snell Locks.<\/p>\n<p class=\"text | article-text\">The seaway was supposed to close for the season on Monday, but ice on the river has <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wwnytv.com\/2026\/01\/05\/st-lawrence-seaway-closure-delayed-freighters-are-slowed-by-ice\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.wwnytv.com\/2026\/01\/05\/st-lawrence-seaway-closure-delayed-freighters-are-slowed-by-ice\/\">delayed ships from getting to their destinations<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"copyright |\">Copyright 2026 WWNY.
