Despite his claim that \u201cjust about everybody\u201d in America wanted him to host this year\u2019s Kennedy Center Honors<\/a> special, President Donald Trump<\/a> didn\u2019t get many viewers to watch the CBS broadcast as the annual event boasted record lows<\/a>. And no one was more delighted by the news than Jimmy Kimmel<\/a>.<\/p>\n

In the first Jimmy Kimmel Live!<\/a> monologue of 2026, Kimmel poked fun at the historically low ratings. \u201cYou know he hosted an awards show over the break,\u201d said Kimmel<\/a>. \u201cAfter boasting about what a great host he is and how much better he is than I am and how huge his ratings would be, Trump hosted the lowest-rated Kennedy Center Honors telecast of all time.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cBoy, I\u2019d hate to be the White House intern who had to tear that headline out of all the papers and eat \u2019em,\u201d joked the late-night host.<\/p>\n

The President Trump-hosted ceremony averaged 3.01 million viewers<\/a>. This was down 25 percent on the 2024 Kennedy Center Honors, which at the time posted a record low of 4.1 million viewers.<\/p>\n

\u201cYou know, as I recall, he said he\u2019d step down if this happened. He said, \u2018If I can\u2019t beat out Jimmy Kimmel, then I don\u2019t think I should be president.\u2019 Well, hey, a deal is a deal. Back to Mar-a-Lago you go,\u201d continued Kimmel.<\/p>\n

Kimmel was referring to Trump\u2019s comment to the press<\/a> in which he told reporters he \u201cwatched some of the people that host. Jimmy Kimmel was horrible, and some of these people. If I can\u2019t beat out Jimmy Kimmel in terms of talent, then I don\u2019t think I should be president.\u201d<\/p>\n

Trump became the first sitting president to host the Kennedy Center Honors, which celebrate \u201cindividuals whose unique contributions have shaped our world.\u201d Trump took to Truth Social<\/a> on the day of the broadcast to hype up the event. \u201cAt the request of the Board, and just about everybody else in America, I am hosting the event,\u201d he wrote.<\/p>\n

This year\u2019s Kennedy Center Honors \u2014 which were held in Washington, DC, on December 7 and aired on CBS on December 23 \u2014 recognized country music star George Strait<\/a>, metal band KISS, singer Gloria Gaynor<\/a>, and actors Michael Crawford<\/a> and Sylvester Stallone<\/a>.<\/p>\n
