{"id":498086,"date":"2026-01-07T04:28:11","date_gmt":"2026-01-07T04:28:11","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/498086\/"},"modified":"2026-01-07T04:28:11","modified_gmt":"2026-01-07T04:28:11","slug":"state-shares-cross-bronx-bridge-rehab-plans","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/498086\/","title":{"rendered":"State shares Cross Bronx bridge rehab plans"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>For decades, the Cross Bronx Expressway has meant traffic, truck noise and aging bridges that residents say seem long overdue for repair.<\/p>\n<p>On Tuesday night, state transportation officials laid out what they call the next step: a plan to rebuild several of those bridges, and they\u2019re asking the community to weigh in before the clock runs out.<\/p>\n<p><b>What You Need To Know<\/b><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>For decades, the Cross Bronx Expressway has meant traffic, truck noise and aging bridges that residents say seem long overdue for repair<\/li>\n<p><\/p>\n<li>On Tuesday night, state transportation officials laid out what they call the next step: a plan to rebuild several of those bridges, and they\u2019re asking the community to weigh in before the clock runs out on Friday<\/li>\n<p><\/p>\n<li>The five bridges between Boston Road and Rosedale Avenue undergoing repair were built about 70 years ago<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li>The American Society of Engineers recently gave New York State\u2019s bridges a C- on the latest infrastructure report card, a warning that many more need major work<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><b data-rte-class=\"rte-temp\"><\/b><\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis is a culmination of listening to the public but also soliciting feedback on what will be the ultimate design of this project.\u201d Rolando Infante, a publlic information officer with the New York State Department of Transportation, said.<\/p>\n<p>The five bridges between Boston Road and Rosedale Avenue undergoing repair were built about 70 years ago.<\/p>\n<p>The American Society of Engineers recently gave New York State\u2019s bridges a C- on the latest infrastructure report card, a warning that many more need major work.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019m looking forward to seeing what changes they\u2019re implementing,\u201d West Farms resident Dana Mason said.<\/p>\n<p>One of the design options includes a shared bike and pedestrian path, built along a new traffic diversion structure beside the expressway. It\u2019s meant to create a safer way for residents like Mason to cross the area.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI have a bike, but I\u2019m too scared to ride it out in these streets,\u201d Mason said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThey feel very unsafe sometimes when they\u2019re on their bikes in the Bronx, and something like this \u2014 a traffic diversion structure \u2014 is a very welcome addition to reconnect communities,\u201d Infante said.<\/p>\n<p>Engineers are also studying a \u201cbreakdown shoulder\u201d so stalled cars can pull over instead of shutting down a travel lane.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cRight now, if a car breaks down in the current scheme of the highway, it blocks off a lane of traffic, and it makes the traffic go slower,\u201d Infante said.<\/p>\n<p>Some neighbors have said the timeline for public review feels too tight for a project this big, and worry the window to weigh in doesn\u2019t give families enough time to fully understand what\u2019s being proposed.<\/p>\n<p>Officials say the 53-day comment period is more than the 30-day minimum requirement.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe\u2019re going to be listening to the community and will be adhering to the will of the community,\u201d Infante said.<\/p>\n<p>The public comment period ends on Friday.<\/p>\n<p>Once a proposal is accepted, construction could begin as soon as the end of the year.
