{"id":498223,"date":"2026-01-07T05:48:15","date_gmt":"2026-01-07T05:48:15","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/498223\/"},"modified":"2026-01-07T05:48:15","modified_gmt":"2026-01-07T05:48:15","slug":"ato-looking-to-bar-tax-dodgers-from-leaving-the-country-in-bid-to-lower-50-billion-debt","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/498223\/","title":{"rendered":"ATO looking to bar tax dodgers from leaving the country in bid to lower $50 billion debt"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.9news.com.au\/national\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"Australian\">Australian<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.9news.com.au\/tax\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"Tax\">Tax<\/a> Office (ATO) is cracking down on tax dodgers fleeing Australia as it looks to rein in a massive <a href=\"https:\/\/www.9news.com.au\/money\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"debt\">debt<\/a>.The collectable debt book <a href=\"https:\/\/www.9news.com.au\/finance\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"bill\">bill<\/a> has blown out to $50 billion, with the ATO looking to crack down on people seeking to flee the country or go on <a href=\"https:\/\/www.9news.com.au\/world\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"overseas\">overseas<\/a> holidays rather than paying the tax they owe or <a href=\"https:\/\/www.9news.com.au\/superannuation\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"superannuation\">superannuation<\/a> to their <a href=\"https:\/\/www.9news.com.au\/employment\/2\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"employees\">employees<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>As a result, the ATO is issuing departure prohibition orders (DPO) against people it believes are attempting to avoid paying their debts.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/01\/https:\/\/prod.static9.net.au\/fs\/49668fd3-7e3d-4817-bef5-e5e43ca71fc5.jpeg\"   alt=\"An airport sign\"\/>One DPO was issued just as a person was trying to board an international flight. (Getty)<\/p>\n<p>According to recent data, the ATO has issued 21 DPOs, which is more than the total number issued in the last financial year as a whole.<\/p>\n<p>Some are issued in the nick of time, with one person barred from boarding a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.9news.com.au\/air-travel\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"flight\">flight<\/a> in the early hours of the morning thanks to a DPO.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Taxpayers with significant debts to the ATO that think they can skip the country without paying what is owed to the community should think again,&#8221; ATO Assistant Commissioner Anita Challen said.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;We think most Australians would expect <a href=\"https:\/\/www.9news.com.au\/business\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"businesses\">businesses<\/a> to pay their employees&#8217; superannuation before they plan an overseas holiday&#8221;<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/01\/https:\/\/prod.static9.net.au\/fs\/27cb5d9c-ece0-4554-b60a-3ed26206c07c.jpeg\"   alt=\"\"\/>The ATO is warning Australians against trying to flee the country with outstanding tax debts.
