AVON, Ohio (WOIO) – A coyote was caught on camera roaming through the backyard of an Avon home.<\/p>\n
Kyle Koprowski with the Lake Erie Nature and Science Center said this is the time of year when coyotes are extremely active.<\/p>\n
\u201cIt\u2019s mating season for them, so super common to see them, plus a lot of young coyotes are leaving the den trying to find their territories, so definitely the time of year for them to be around,\u201d Koprowski said.<\/p>\n
While spotting one can be startling, Koprowski said there are safe ways to get a coyote to move along.<\/p>\n
\u201cLoud noises, clap, there are noise makers, in the summer you can use a hose, basically just making yourself look big, usually they are not trying to harm you, they\u2019re just looking for food,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n
Safety precautions for pet owners<\/p>\n
Koprowski said it\u2019s important to remove anything that could attract coyotes, including pet food and grills. He also recommends keeping a close eye on pets.<\/p>\n
\u201cPut a leash on them, make sure you check your backyard before you let them out. Use a spotlight or a flashlight, don\u2019t let them out by themselves even if you don\u2019t see anything out there, sometimes they are still there,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n
Koprowski said most of the time, coyotes are more afraid of people than people are of them.<\/p>\n
\u201cThey\u2019re going to continue to get used to us, so we are going to have to adapt to them,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n
