Kennedy Jr. attend a Make America Healthy Again (MAHA) Commission event, in the East Room of the White House in Washington, D.C., U.S., May 22, 2025. <\/p>\n<p>Evelyn Hockstein | Reuters<\/p>\n<p>The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/2026\/01\/05\/trump-administration-has-spoken-to-multiple-oil-companies-about-venezuela.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Trump administration<\/a> on Tuesday said it was freezing <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hhs.gov\/press-room\/hhs-freezes-child-care-family-assistance-grants-five-states-fraud-concerns.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">$10 billion in federal grant funds<\/a> for certain child care and family assistance programs in five states because of &#8220;serious concerns about widespread fraud&#8221; in state-administered programs.<\/p>\n<p>All five states targeted by the freeze \u2014 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/id\/10000551\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">California<\/a>, Colorado, Illinois, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/2025\/07\/10\/minnesota-top-states-for-business-ranking.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Minnesota<\/a>, and New York \u2014 are led by Democrats.<\/p>\n<p>The action applies to three programs overseen by the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hhs.gov\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">U.S. Health and Human Services Department<\/a>&#8216;s Administration for Children and Families: Child Care and Development Fund, <a href=\"https:\/\/acf.gov\/ofa\/programs\/temporary-assistance-needy-families-tanf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Temporary Assistance for Needy Families,<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/acf.gov\/ocs\/programs\/ssbg\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Social Services Block Grant<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>The move comes a day after <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/2026\/01\/05\/tim-walz-minnesota-governor-reelection-fraud.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Minnesota Gov. Tim Walz<\/a> dropped his bid for a third term amid political fallout from widespread fraud in social service programs in the state, including child-care services, which a federal prosecutor has estimated cost more than $9 billion.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Families who rely on child care and family assistance programs deserve confidence that these resources are used lawfully and for their intended purpose,&#8221; said Deputy HHS Secretary Jim O&#8217;Neill in a statement.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;This action reflects our commitment to program integrity, fiscal responsibility, and compliance with federal requirements,&#8221; O&#8217;Neill said.<\/p>\n<p>More than $7.3 billion in TANF funds have been frozen, and nearly $2.4 billion in CCDF funds have been frozen. Nearly $840 million in Social Services Block Grant funding was frozen.<\/p>\n<p>Illinois Gov. JB Pritzker blasted President <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/donald-trump\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Donald Trump<\/a> for the freeze.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Rather than making it more affordable for families, Trump\u00a0is\u00a0stripping away child care from those just trying to go to work,&#8221; Pritzker wrote in <a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/GovPritzker\/status\/2008727813265002532\" target=\"_blank\">a post on X<\/a>. <\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Thousands depend on these\u00a0programs, and now their livelihoods are at risk,&#8221; Pritzker wrote. &#8220;It&#8217;s wrong and cruel \u2014 we&#8217;ll take every\u00a0step\u00a0possible to defend Illinoisians.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/GovKathyHochul\/status\/2008646851864711449\" target=\"_blank\">New York Gov. Kathy Hochul<\/a>, in a tweet, wrote, &#8220;Trump is threatening to freeze $10 billion in child care funding in blue states to make life harder and more expensive for kids and families. It&#8217;s vindictive. It&#8217;s cruel. And we&#8217;ll fight it with every fiber of our being.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>HHS on Monday announced that it was rescinding a series of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hhs.gov\/press-room\/hhs-close-biden-era-loophole-states-pay-child-care-providers-without-counting-attendance.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">child-care rules<\/a> implemented under the Biden administration &#8220;that required states to pay providers before verifying any attendance and before care was delivered.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;The change will roll back provisions in the 2024 Child Care and Development Fund rule that weakened oversight and increased the risk of waste, fraud and abuse in federally-funded state child care \u2014 including programs now under investigation in Minnesota,&#8221; HHS said in a statement on Monday.<\/p>\n<p>The department last week froze all federal child care funding for Minnesota, which totals about $185 million annually.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"U.S. President Donald Trump and Health and Human Services (HHS) Secretary Robert F.
