For quite a long period, we carried out military actions that North Korea would have perceived as threatening,\u201d Lee said.<\/p>\n<p>South Korea\u2019s ousted former President Yoon Suk-yeol <a href=\"https:\/\/www.aljazeera.com\/news\/2025\/12\/15\/south-korea-indicts-ex-leader-yoon-over-power-plot-provoking-north\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">has been indicted<\/a> for allegedly trying to provoke military aggression from North Korea in a bid to help him consolidate power.<\/p>\n<p>On Monday, Pyongyang confirmed it had carried out <a href=\"https:\/\/www.aljazeera.com\/news\/2026\/1\/5\/n-koreas-kim-oversaw-hypersonic-missile-tests-cites-geopolitical-crisis\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">test flights of hypersonic missiles<\/a>, with leader Kim Jong Un saying it was important to \u201cexpand the \u2026 nuclear deterrent\u201d in light of \u201cthe recent geopolitical crisis\u201d \u2013 an apparent reference to Washington\u2019s attacks on Venezuela and its abduction of Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"South Korean President Lee \u200dJae Myung proposes a halt to Pyongyang\u2019s nuclear programme in exchange for \u2018compensation\u2019.
