January is supposed to be our coldest month, but a stubborn high-pressure system is kicking off 2026 with a heat wave — highs in the 80s! We’ll watch and track the chance to break records the next three days, including today.

Next Three Days (Copyright 2025 by KPRC Click2Houston – All rights reserved.)

This surge in heat is driven by two elements in our atmosphere. First, an upper-level ridge of high pressure near Mexico is influencing us. Second, steady southerly and southwesterly winds, are also warming us up. It goes without saying that this warmth is unusual for this time of year.

An upper-level ridge of high pressure is increasing the heat in Houston (Copyright 2026 by KPRC Click2Houston – All rights reserved.)Next cold front is Friday:

From the 80s to the 60s: We’re tracking a BIG temperature drop with Friday’s front, leading to noticeably cooler and drier conditions for the weekend. Temperatures are expected to dip into the mid-60s for afternoon highs and the 40s during early mornings.

Houston Daytime Highs (Copyright 2025 by KPRC Click2Houston – All rights reserved.)

If you’re running or watching the Chevron Houston Marathon, the forecast looks close to ideal. Sunday morning temperatures will start between 42 and 46 degrees, with mostly clear skies and a light north wind around 5 mph. This is a near perfect forecast for runners. The rest of marathon day should bring a slight warm-up to the upper 50s by lunchtime with continued light winds.

Cold morning, light winds with mostly clear skies (Copyright 2026 by KPRC Click2Houston – All rights reserved.)

Looking back, previous years have brought much colder, windier, or even rainy conditions to the city during marathon weekend, so this forecast stands out as runner friendly.

Your Extended Forecast:

Our next chance of rain is Thursday and Friday. This front is not particularly strong, so we won’t get a drastic drop in temperatures. And rain doesn’t look impressive either.
