NEW YORK (WABC) — The New York City Council is voting to elect its next speaker on Tuesday afternoon and they are expected to choose Julie Menin.<\/p>\n

Menin, a moderate from the Upper East Side, will be the council’s first Jewish speaker. She is the daughter of a Holocaust survivor.<\/p>\n

One of the first jobs of the new speaker is to decide whether to override 19 vetoes that former Mayor Eric Adams issued on his last day in office.<\/p>\n

Menin previously announced she has the support of 40 out of 51 council members.<\/p>\n

Menin has previously vowed to work with the mayor on shared priorities, like child care and affordability, but she will serve as a check on the mayor, specifically on the most left-leaning aspects of his agenda.<\/p>\n
