Talk about pressure. There is a lot riding on this movie as it tees up the tone and grand plans that the duo have assembled since <a href=\"https:\/\/deadline.com\/tag\/warner-bros\/\" id=\"auto-tag_warner-bros\" data-tag=\"warner-bros\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Warner Bros<\/a> Discovery siloed DC away from the main aorta Warner Bros Motion Picture Group a la the setup of Marvel at Disney.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto     \">\n\tEven more amazing and audacious here, Gunn bet on himself writing, directing and producing the movie that lights the wick to new era at DC following the dark-tone era of Zack Synder and Christopher Nolan.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto     \">\n\tAfter <a data-id=\"1236451446\" data-type=\"pmc-gallery\" href=\"https:\/\/deadline.com\/gallery\/superman-world-premiere-red-carpet-photos\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">a rapturous premiere in Hollywood<\/a> on Monday night and reviews this morning of 85% certified fresh, hopefully there\u2019s no reason for anyone on the Burbank lot to sweat.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto     \">\n\t<strong>RELATED:\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/deadline.com\/gallery\/superman-actors-photo-gallery\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Men of Steel: Every Actor Who Has Played Superman \u2013 Photo Gallery<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto     \">\n\tStudios sources tell us that that <strong>Superman <\/strong>will see at least a <strong>$200M <\/strong>global start at 60,000 global screens, split evenly between domestic and overseas. Stateside, we\u2019re hearing that presales are at <strong>$20M<\/strong>, which is ahead of Gunn\u2019s Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 ($118.4M) and behind fellow 2023 release Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania ($106.1M). Stateside, rivals \u2014 some tracking firms and exhibitors\u2019 internal estimates \u2014 believe Superman flies to $115M-$130M. <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto     \">\n\tWhat could put this over the top? <a data-id=\"1236450641\" data-type=\"post\" href=\"https:\/\/deadline.com\/2025\/07\/superman-review-james-gunn-reboot-1236450641\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Reviews<\/a>, which currently stand at 85% certified fresh on Rotten Tomatoes \u2014 roughly equal to the review rating of the original 1978 Richard Donner Superman starring Christopher Reeve. That will convince the adults to go see this next rendition. Those reviews are leaps and bounds higher than Snyder\u2019s 2013 reboot Man of Steel (57% rotten), his 2016 faceoff Batman v. Superman: Dawn of Justice (23%) and Bryan Singer\u2019s 2006 Superman Returns at 72%.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto     \">\n\tThe Man of Steel will be flying around the world as the major-territory rollout commences on Wednesday in France, Italy and Korea. Thursday adds Germany, Australia, Brazil and Mexico, and Friday brings the UK, Spain, China and Japan on board. It will be in 78 territories total. We expect the best-performing markets to be a mix of the UK, Brazil (which leans heavy into DC), Mexico, Australia, France and Germany.\u00a0 Superman leads presales in China for Thursday previews and on opening Friday, but not on Saturday or Sunday.\u00a0The team notably has traveled to events in Rio and London. At the latter, there was an 11-foot sculpture of Superman suspended at the top of The Shard.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto     \">\n\t<strong>RELATED:\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/deadline.com\/gallery\/superman-movie-posters-characters\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">\u2018Superman\u2019 Character Posters: David Corenswet, Nicholas Hoult, Edi Gathegi, Isabela Merced and Nathan Fillion<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto     \">\n\tTonight, there\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/deadline.com\/2025\/06\/superman-advance-ticket-sales-record-fandango-1236430995\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">the first of the sold-out Amazon Prime member paid screenings<\/a> of Superman, which start at 7 p.m. Previews continue at 2 p.m. Thursday in 3,400 locations, rising to 4,000 by Friday for a U.S.\/Canada 10K-screen footprint.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto     \">\n\tTwo days before preview Thursday, First Choice for Superman stateside is strongest with all dudes over and under 25. Overall First Choice is a point higher than Disney\u2019s Lilo &amp; Stitch ($146M opening), above Warner Bros\/Legendary\u2019s A Minecraft Movie ($162.7M) and 64% lower in first choice than Matt Reeves\u2019 The Batman back in 2022 ($134M opening).<\/p>\n<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto     \">\n\tSuperman absorbs all the premium formats of Dolby, PLF, Screen-X and motion seats for Universal\u2019s <strong>Jurassic World Rebirth<\/strong>, that movie looking at a -55% second hold or $60M. The dinos will have some PLFs this coming weekend. The first movie \u2014 with $134.4M domestic and $300.4M worldwide, unadjusted for inflation \u2014 was part of the early era of blockbusters movies at time when Jaws and Star Wars were taking cinema to the next level. Sequel Superman II also was a big summer hit for Warners back in 1981, with lines around the block on opening weekend and a very notable $14.1M at the time and an end gross of $108.1M, $216.3M worldwide. <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto     \">\n\tBut then Superman lost flight and Warners fumbled the lucrative Reeve franchise greatly. Superman III, in a bad pairing, co-starred comedy star Richard Pryor and was panned by critics at 31% and deep-dived to $59.9M in 1983 (despite a very good $13.3M opening) and $80.2M worldwide. By 1987, when blockbusters were truly in full swing, audiences turned their back on Superman IV: Quest for Peace, which nosedived to $15.6M stateside off a $5.6M debut, and just north of $30M worldwide \u2014 a disaster. <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto     \">\n\tSinger\u2019s Superman Returns would pay homage and act as sequel to the original Donner movie with an eerily similar looking actor to Reeve in Brandon Routh. The movie back in 2006 didn\u2019t exactly take off, with a $52.5M three-day and five-day pre-July 4th bow of $84.5M. Its enormous $223M production was the movie\u2019s biggest piece of Kryptonite, resulting in a $200M domestic take and $391M worldwide.<\/p>\n<p>\t\t\t\t\t\t<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"c-lazy-image__img lrv-u-background-color-grey-lightest lrv-u-width-100p lrv-u-display-block lrv-u-height-auto\" src=\"https:\/\/deadline.com\/wp-content\/themes\/pmc-deadline-2019\/assets\/public\/lazyload-fallback.jpg\" data-lazy-src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/07\/MCDBAVV_EC020.jpg\" alt=\"\" data-lazy- data-lazy- height=\"200\" width=\"300\"\/><\/p>\n<p>\t\t\t\t\t\u2018Batman v. Superman\u2019<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto     \">\n\tSnyder\u2019s Man of Steel in 2013 finally took off with then-fresh face Henry Cavill opening to $116.6M domestic and ending its run at $291M U.S.\/Canada, $670.1M worldwide. That movie would spawn Cavill\u2019s Superman as a lead in 2016\u2019s Snyder pic Batman v. Superman and the director\u2019s Justice League the following year. Batman v. Superman owns the record opening for a Superman movie with $166M domestic, and overall take at $330.3M U.S.\/Canada and $874.3M worldwide.
