{"id":500273,"date":"2026-01-08T02:00:27","date_gmt":"2026-01-08T02:00:27","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/500273\/"},"modified":"2026-01-08T02:00:27","modified_gmt":"2026-01-08T02:00:27","slug":"mamdani-names-christine-clarke-new-head-of-nyc-commission-on-human-rights","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/500273\/","title":{"rendered":"Mamdani names Christine Clarke new head of NYC Commission on Human Rights"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Mayor Mamdani on Wednesday appointed a new head of the city<a href=\"https:\/\/www.nyc.gov\/site\/cchr\/index.page\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"> Human Rights Commission<\/a>, picking Christine Clarke, previously a litigator at anti-poverty group Legal Services NYC, to serve in the role.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.legalservicesnyc.org\/people\/christine-clarke\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Clarke<\/a> will replace Annabel Palma. Palma was originally tapped to lead the commission by ex-Mayor Bill de Blasio and was reappointed by Mayor Eric Adams in 2022.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe will make this city more just, and we will do so as New Yorkers, not by shying away from complexity or conflict, but by confronting what we know to be wrong wherever it arises,\u201d Mamdani said at a Jackson Heights, Queens, news conference announcing Clarke\u2019s appointment.<\/p>\n<p>The commission is tasked with investigating complaints of discrimination and other human rights law violations.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat work has never been more important, and the person entrusted to lead it has never been more important, either,\u201d Mamdani said, praising Clarke for her dedication \u201cto fighting for New Yorkers who need a champion.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\" lazyautosizes lazyload\" alt=\"New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani announces the appointment of Christine Clarke as the new chair and commissioner of the Commission on Human Rights in Jackson Heights, Queens on Wednesday, January 7, 2026. (AP Photo\/Yuki Iwamura)<\/p>\n<p>Clarke will work under <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nydailynews.com\/2025\/12\/19\/mamdani-names-two-deputy-mayors-creates-new-department-of-economic-justice\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Julie Su<\/a>, Mamdani\u2019s deputy mayor for economic justice.<\/p>\n<p>The mayor also on Wednesday appointed Simonia Brown as a top policy adviser to focus on executing Mamdani\u2019s affordability agenda in Albany.
