The defendants have also settled four other cases in New York, Colorado and Texas, court documents show.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmk4lveqi00133b6pf5xystj4@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            The terms of the settlements were not immediately available.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmk4leaie00043b6ployvrk2g@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Matthew Bergman, a lawyer with the Social Media Victims Law Center who represented the plaintiffs in all five cases, declined to comment on the agreement. Character.AI also declined to comment. Google, which now employs both Shazeer and De Freitas, did not immediately respond to a request for comment.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmk4le19q00003b6pzrced2tr@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Garcia raised alarms around the safety of AI chatbots for teens and children when she filed her lawsuit in October 2024. Her son, Sewell Setzer III, died seven months earlier by suicide after developing a deep relationship with Character.AI bots.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmk4llqcx000f3b6p9xh8ugtw@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            The suit alleged Character.AI failed to implement proper safety measures to prevent her son from developing an inappropriate relationship with a chatbot that caused him to withdraw from his family. It also claimed the platform did not adequately respond when Setzer began expressing thoughts of self-harm. He was messaging with the bot \u2014 which encouraged him to \u201ccome home\u201d to it \u2014 in the moments before his death, according to court documents.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmk4lgk6w000d3b6p1fqu02fr@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            A wave of other <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2025\/09\/16\/tech\/character-ai-developer-lawsuit-teens-suicide-and-suicide-attempt\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">lawsuits<\/a> against Character.AI followed, alleging that its chatbots contributed to mental health issues among teens, exposed them to sexually explicit material and lacked adequate safeguards. OpenAI has also faced <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2025\/11\/06\/us\/openai-chatgpt-suicide-lawsuit-invs-vis\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">lawsuits<\/a> alleging that ChatGPT contributed to young people\u2019s suicides.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmk4lpsu5000l3b6p685okfn3@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Both companies have since implemented a series of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2024\/12\/10\/tech\/character-ai-second-youth-safety-lawsuit\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">new safety measures<\/a> and features, including for young users. Last fall, Character.AI <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2025\/10\/29\/tech\/character-ai-teens-under-18-app-changes\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">said<\/a> it would no longer allow users under the age of 18 to have back-and-forth conversations with its chatbots, acknowledging the \u201cquestions that have been raised about how teens do, and should, interact with this new technology.\u201d\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmk4mtkrw00183b6pcc2vuyki@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            At least one online safety nonprofit has<a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2025\/04\/30\/tech\/ai-companion-chatbots-unsafe-for-kids-report\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"> advised against<\/a> the use of companion-like chatbots by children under the age of 18.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmk4mzefu001k3b6pod9xavyp@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Still, with AI being promoted as a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2025\/08\/26\/tech\/openai-classroom-software-students\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">homework helper<\/a> and through social media, nearly a third of US teenagers say they use chatbots daily. And 16% of those teens say they do so several times a day to \u201calmost constantly,\u201d according to a Pew Research Center <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2025\/12\/09\/tech\/teens-ai-chatbot-use-study\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">study<\/a> published in December.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmk4mzefu001l3b6p7tj6mtud@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Concerns around the use of chatbots aren\u2019t limited to children. Users and mental health experts <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2025\/09\/05\/tech\/ai-sparked-delusion-chatgpt\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">began warning<\/a> last year of AI tools contributing to delusions or isolation among adults, too.\n    <\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"New York \u00a0\u2014\u00a0 EDITOR\u2019S NOTE:\u00a0 This story contains discussion of suicide.
