A Queensland prisoner has sensationally confessed to murdering another man behind bars, telling a court, “I killed old mate because he’s a child molester”.<\/p>\n

Isaac James Martin and Bodhi Johnson have been charged with the murder of Shannon Daniel Norgate at the Maryborough Correctional Centre, north of Brisbane, late last year.<\/p>\n

Martin fronted the Brisbane Magistrates Court via video link on Thursday and was asked by the judge if he had legal representation.<\/p>\n

“Nah, haven’t bothered,” the 31-year-old told the court.<\/p>\n

“Well, it’s a murder charge,” Magistrate Aaron Simpson responded.<\/p>\n

“Yeah, all good,” Martin responded.<\/p>\n

Magistrate Simpson strongly advised Martin to seek legal advice, noting that if convicted, he would face a mandatory life sentence.<\/p>\n

“That’s right, Your Honour, I killed old mate because he’s a child molester, he likes kids,” he responded.<\/p>\n

“I’m not denying it, I killed him.”<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

Magistrate Simpson went on to explain that “killing a person doesn’t necessarily mean it’s murder”.<\/p>\n

“A lawyer might be able to help you get the best result.”<\/p>\n

Norgate was found unresponsive at the correctional centre on November 26. Police alleged the 28-year-old sustained injuries from an altercation.<\/p>\n

He was taken to Hervey Bay Hospital, but died from his injuries on December 1.<\/p>\n

Johnson, 29, also fronted court on Thursday via video link. He said he had previously spoken to Legal Aid about getting representation for the charge.<\/p>\n

Both accused’s matters have been adjourned for a committal hearing at the Brisbane Magistrates Court on March 9.<\/p>\n

In March 2020, Norgate was sentenced to prison in the Gladstone District Court on several child abuse charges.<\/p>\n

Those included indecent treatment of children under 12, two counts of attempted indecent treatment of children under 12, and taking a child for an immoral purpose.<\/p>\n
