{"id":500840,"date":"2026-01-08T07:40:12","date_gmt":"2026-01-08T07:40:12","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/500840\/"},"modified":"2026-01-08T07:40:12","modified_gmt":"2026-01-08T07:40:12","slug":"the-first-of-chinas-ai-tigers-goes-public-as-zhipu-climbs-in-hong-kong-debut","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/500840\/","title":{"rendered":"The first of China\u2019s &#8216;AI tigers&#8217; goes public as Zhipu climbs in Hong Kong debut"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The Zhipu AI logo is seen displayed on a smartphone screen. <\/p>\n<p>Sopa Images | Lightrocket | Getty Images<\/p>\n<p>Shares of Knowledge Atlas Technology JSC, better known as Zhipu, edged higher on their Hong Kong debut, following a $558 million initial public offering that made it the first of China&#8217;s &#8220;AI tigers&#8221; to go public.<\/p>\n<p>The stock rose as much as 15% above its offer price of <a href=\"https:\/\/www1.hkexnews.hk\/listedco\/listconews\/sehk\/2026\/0107\/2026010701798.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">116.20<\/a> Hong Kong Dollars ($15) on Thursday, with around 37.4 million shares on offer by the Beijing-based startup.<\/p>\n<p>The IPO valued Zhipu at around HK$4.3 billion, making it one of the larger AI flotations in recent years.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Founded in 2019 by researchers from a top Chinese university, Zhipu represents the country&#8217;s first major large language model company to go public through an IPO. The listing marks another key milestone for China&#8217;s broader artificial intelligence sector following a wave of recent listings by AI chipmakers.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The firm, strongly backed by Beijing, is also considered one of China&#8217;s so-called &#8220;AI tigers&#8221; \u2014 startups building large language models to rival the likes of OpenAI and Anthropic.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Other notable firms in the group include DeepSeek, which famously rattled markets early last year with the release of one of its LLM models.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>While not as well known globally as DeepSeek, Zhipu gained attention last year when American AI juggernaut OpenAI<a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/2025\/06\/26\/openai-flags-beijing-backed-zhipu-ai-as-a-top-rival.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"> highlighted<\/a> its notable progress as a competitor on the &#8220;front line&#8221; of China&#8217;s race to lead in AI.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The firm<a href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/world\/china\/zhipu-ai-ramps-up-overseas-expansion-strategy-ahead-ipo-2025-04-23\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"> reportedly<\/a> has offices  in the United Kingdom, Singapore, Malaysia, and across the Middle East. It also operates joint &#8220;innovation centers&#8221; projects across Southeast Asia, including in Indonesia and Vietnam.<\/p>\n<p>Zhipu&#8217;s progress has come despite being placed <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ecfr.gov\/current\/title-15\/subtitle-B\/chapter-VII\/subchapter-C\/part-744\/appendix-Supplement%20No.%204%20to%20Part%20744\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">on<\/a> the US Commerce Department&#8217;s Entity List in January last year, after U.S. officials said it was working with China&#8217;s military. The firm&#8217;s ability to train its AI models has also been constrained by U.S. restrictions on access to advanced semiconductor technology and expertise.<\/p>\n<p>According to Zhipu&#8217;s<a href=\"https:\/\/www1.hkexnews.hk\/listedco\/listconews\/sehk\/2025\/1230\/2025123000017.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"> prospectus<\/a>, it plans to use 70% of the IPO proceeds toward research and development of its general-purpose large AI models. The firm reported revenue of 312.4 million yuan in 2024.<\/p>\n<p>Rival Chinese AI start-up MiniMax is expected to launch its own offering on Friday, following a confidential filing last year.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"The Zhipu AI logo is seen displayed on a smartphone screen.
