{"id":501284,"date":"2026-01-08T12:11:16","date_gmt":"2026-01-08T12:11:16","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/501284\/"},"modified":"2026-01-08T12:11:16","modified_gmt":"2026-01-08T12:11:16","slug":"darius-slayton-prepares-for-another-new-coach-with-new-york-giants","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/501284\/","title":{"rendered":"Darius Slayton prepares for another new coach with New York Giants"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"YAJIOLV4SRDNFNTYIOSX46AR4I\">Since joining the New York Giants from <a href=\"https:\/\/www.al.com\/auburnfootball\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.al.com\/auburnfootball\/\">Auburn<\/a> as a fifth-round selection in the 2019 NFL Draft, wide receiver<a href=\"https:\/\/www.al.com\/topic\/Darius%20Slayton\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.al.com\/topic\/Darius%20Slayton\/\"> Darius Slayton<\/a> has played for four head coaches and with 12 starting quarterbacks.<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"CI6BST7H6RAFVFTFA2SLAK2ZNU\">Slayton doesn\u2019t know who will coach the Giants in the 2026 season. But he knows who the quarterback will be.<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"4XHHOIJWTNCO3P3Q2NCECN6G3A\">\u201cJaxson Dart will be here for a long time,\u201d <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=SYX5faFJxk0\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=SYX5faFJxk0\">Slayton said <\/a>after New York concluded its season with a 34-17 victory over the Dallas Cowboys on Sunday. \u201cHe\u2019s talented. He\u2019s young. I mean, I think any coach that would come here would be wise to invest in him and try to bring him along because he has all the potential in the world, and I think that it wouldn\u2019t be wise to to pass him over.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"VD3ERLWWNVA3LMG4DI5546F544\">The Giants selected Dart from Ole Miss in the first round of the 2025 NFL Draft. He became the starting quarterback in the fourth game of the season and went the rest of the way, except for two games missed because of injuries. Dart completed 216-of-339 passes for 2,272 yards with 15 touchdowns and five interceptions and ran for 487 yards and nine touchdowns on 86 carries.<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"MIYGBO4ZYZF3FG4O55HLI6VPPA\">\u201cI think he got better as the games went on,\u201d Slayton said. \u201cI think, period, he did a great job protecting the football. You know, very few turnovers, especially for a rookie quarterback. You\u2019re kind of booked for 10 turnovers, at least, when you have a rookie quarterback back there, but he did a great job protecting the ball. And then as he went on, well, he got a little better protecting himself. Offensive coordinator Mike Kafka finished the season as interim coach. <\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"WZLBLXCAA5CD3J2I3BIOUWYFUY\">In Slayton\u2019s rookie season, Pat Shurmur was the Giants\u2019 coach, followed by two seasons of Joe Judge.<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"3L7X6GMCW5A6ZOLSB6B3RGJRXM\">\u201cYou think about it,\u201d Slayton said on Monday. \u201cI\u2019ve been here seven years, and it\u2019s about to be going into my eighth year. I\u2019ve had four head coaches. So literally half my career, there\u2019s been a new voice. But that\u2019s kind of the nature of the beast. And, you know, we\u2019ll do our best to embrace the next guy in here and I\u2019ll try to prevent him getting replaced, whoever he might be.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"DNEKGPF2W5BK3JXBHGVFPXFV2E\">Slayton had a suggestion on the type of coach that would work out for the Giants. <\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"YQPSS2SPHFF5LJGS2RJEZYVLUM\">\u201cSomebody that\u2019s Tom Coughlin-esque, I feel like,\u201d Slayton said. \u201cHe brought a lot of things to this organization. I think it\u2019s no mistake why he won when he was here was his personality and the way he went about his business. And I think it takes a certain type of person to be a head coach in New York. It\u2019s a tough job. Obviously, comes with a lot of scrutiny. But I think you need to have a certain disposition to get the job done effectively. And I feel like he probably embodies a lot of the qualities that we require.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"M43MWBZ75JDQDACHGGAQETE6NM\">Coughlin served as New York\u2019s head coach from 2004 through 2015. The Giants won the Super Bowls for the 2007 and 2011 seasons under Coughlin\u2019s guidance.<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"5VGT7JN32ZAEHGWCPEA547E54U\">New York has reached the postseason once in Slayton\u2019s time with the team. The Giants finished with a 4-13 record after defeating the Las Vegas Raiders and Cowboys in their final two games. <\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"SXV242JNGBEZ7B3XEGNNJ5MW3Q\">\u201cWe just do that earlier in the season in games, we\u2019ll find ourselves where we want to be at the end of the year,\u201d <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=SYX5faFJxk0\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=SYX5faFJxk0\">Slayton said<\/a>. \u201c\u2026 We have young talent, and, at the end of the day, all we need to do is finish games better earlier in the year to win those. We did that this week and last week. We just had to carry that over earlier in the season.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"RZOMUKSRSJFMTDFZAYW6ZKUZRI\">In four of his seven seasons, Slayton has been New York\u2019s leading receiver. This season, he finished second to wide receiver Wan\u2019Dale Robinson, who had 1,014 receiving yards. Slayton had 37 receptions for 538 yards and one touchdown in 14 games. Slayton had the fewest TD receptions and the second-fewest receptions and receiving yards of his NFL career after he <a href=\"https:\/\/www.al.com\/sports\/2025\/03\/former-auburn-wide-receiver-gets-big-raise-not-to-leave-in-nfl-free-agency.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.al.com\/sports\/2025\/03\/former-auburn-wide-receiver-gets-big-raise-not-to-leave-in-nfl-free-agency.html\">signed a three-year, $36 million contract<\/a> in March.<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"3MUYQU5Q3NB4VEQ5FHHG3R4C64\">\u201cIt was definitely up and down for me a good bit,\u201d Slayton said. \u201cI think I played well in some spots, played not my best in some other spots, and, you know, I just got to get back to it this offseason.
