PHILADELPHIA (WPVI) — Officials say a woman was killed in a fire inside a row home in Philadelphia’s Ogontz neighborhood.<\/p>\n
It happened around 4:45 a.m. on Thursday on the 6200 block of Ogontz Avenue, near Godfrey Avenue.<\/p>\n
Firefighters say they found heavy smoke and flames coming from the home when they arrived.<\/p>\n
Inside, they found the woman, believed to be in her 60s, unresponsive on the first floor. She was rushed to the hospital, but did not survive.<\/p>\n
A neighbor who saw the flames says the quick work of firefighters helped stop it from spreading down the block.<\/p>\n
“Those guys were outstanding. I thought it would catch the other house adjoining, and they saved those houses, so that was a blessing,” said Jerry Adams. “But it was so sad to hear that my older neighbor across the street passed away. She was a real nice lady. I spoke to her often, and just to see something like that happen is tragic.”<\/p>\n
Officials say the fire damaged at least one other home.<\/p>\n
The identity of the woman has not yet been released.<\/p>\n
The cause of the fire remains under investigation.
