But who would buy it?\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmk4g252d00013b6p4w9gr1do@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            China has long been one of Venezuela\u2019s biggest customers for oil. But its hunger for that oil is waning, as the country pulls off a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2025\/01\/23\/climate\/china-evs-growth-oil-market\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">stunningly fast transition<\/a> to electric vehicles.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmk2zc9ee00043b6pbcghyulz@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            That transition means China\u2019s oil imports likely won\u2019t be seriously disrupted by the recent US military operation in Venezuela and Trump\u2019s push for American companies to revitalize the oil infrastructure there, experts told CNN. China will probably be able to procure the oil it needs from Russia or Iran.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmk2zc9ef00053b6ppjlm5ie9@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            But there\u2019s little doubt on the long-term trajectory of China\u2019s oil demand: Analysts say it will trend downward. Many have projected the country has either already reached \u2018peak oil\u2019 or will very soon.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmk4at2vo00023b6pmxjogsag@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            As <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2026\/01\/07\/politics\/venezuela-trump-oil-demands\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">CNN has reported<\/a>, the Trump administration has told Venezuela\u2019s interim president Delcy Rodriguez the country must cut ties with China, Iran, Russia and Cuba, and agree to partner exclusively with the US on oil production. On Wednesday, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2026\/01\/07\/politics\/trump-officials-venezuela-oil-plan\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Trump administration officials said<\/a> the US would sell Venezuela\u2019s oil.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmk5h1vl100003b6pfgsoxuj5@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            In a statement to CNN, the Chinese foreign ministry called the business relationship between China and Venezuela \u201clegitimate and in line with the interests of both sides.\u201d The two countries\u2019 cooperation \u201cis unrelated to any third party, nor is it subject to third-party interference,\u201d China\u2019s foreign ministry added.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmk31vq1y00003b6ppustt9ez@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            China\u2019s oil diet matters. As the world\u2019s biggest oil importer, what happens here has ripple effects across the global oil market.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmk302p4o00033b6pgr0ha8d2@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Energy experts say this trend shows how sharply the US and China are diverging on the energy transition, with China sprinting far ahead on renewables and EVs, while the US doubles down on drilling oil at home and abroad.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmk2zc9ef00063b6pn7l23bei@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Much of this has been driven <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2025\/01\/23\/climate\/china-evs-growth-oil-market\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">by the transformation<\/a> of China\u2019s transportation sector from gas-powered vehicles to electric. China owns the EV market; of the 18.5 million electric vehicles sold globally last year, more than 11 million were sold in China, <a href=\"https:\/\/rhomotion.com\/news\/global-ev-sales-reach-18-5-million-units-growing-by-21-ytd-in-november-2025\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">according to<\/a> UK research firm Rho Motion.<strong> <\/strong>\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmk2zc9ef00073b6pzgpdwpky@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            \u201cThis is just very decisive; it\u2019s not going to go back,\u201d said Li Shuo, director of the China climate hub at the Asia Society Policy Institute. Chinese company BYD \u2014 which <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2026\/01\/02\/business\/tesla-byd-ev\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">recently upended Tesla<\/a> as the world\u2019s largest seller of EVs \u2014 exported a record number around the world this year, Rho Motion data shows.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmk2zc9ef00093b6plf5elfh2@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            \u201cWe are now seeing the China EV story being replicated in other parts of the world, and very interestingly, more so in the global south than the US and European countries,\u201d Shuo said.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmk2zc9ef000b3b6poedic8i2@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            While oil demand from the country\u2019s transportation sector has already peaked, other sectors including petrochemicals and jet fuel are projected to keep rising. About 400,000-500,000 barrels per day of Venezuelan oil flow to China, according to Janiv Shah, a vice president of commodity market research at Norwegian energy firm Rystad. Venezuela accounts for a small percentage of China\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.eia.gov\/todayinenergy\/detail.php?id=61843\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">overall oil imports<\/a>.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmk2zc9ef000c3b6p07qpj71e@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            \u201cAny US intervention could force this number to drop dramatically as we see this move as a symbolic strike against China on the world scale,\u201d Shah wrote in an email. But Shah added China will still have access to oil supplies from other countries. \u201cChinese refiners would likely pivot to other discounted sanctioned barrels from Iran and Russia.\u201d\n    <\/p>\n<p>       <img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/01\/gettyimages-2254150512.jpg\" alt=\"Oil storage tanks at a facility near Ningbo, China, on Monday, January 5. The US's shock intervention in Venezuela will likely choke oil flows to China, but experts told CNN that China is close to \" peak=\"\" oil=\"\" and=\"\" demand=\"\" is=\"\" falling.=\"\" class=\"image_large__dam-img image_large__dam-img--loading\" onload=\"this.classList.remove('image_large__dam-img--loading')\" onerror=\"imageLoadError(this)\" height=\"2667\" width=\"4000\" loading=\"lazy\"\/><\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmk2zc9ef000d3b6pkltdljmq@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            In other words, Venezuela needs China\u2019s business more than China needs Venezuela, Shuo said.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmk2zc9ef000e3b6paimte41f@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            \u201cVenezuela is very much reliant on China as a market, there is no question about that,\u201d he said.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmk2zc9ef000f3b6puzfae2s9@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            And in the long-term, the US intervention in Venezuela could only reinforce China\u2019s pursuit of energy independence \u2014 attempting to produce more of its own energy at home and break reliance on foreign sources of energy that can be disrupted.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmk2zc9ef000g3b6p62pxj6f9@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            As <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2025\/07\/16\/climate\/china-us-wind-solar-energy-trump\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">CNN reported last year<\/a>, China was building 510 gigawatts of utility-scale solar and wind capacity, according to Global Energy Monitor, an addition to the eye-popping 1,400 gigawatts already online. China committed to building even more in September, vowing to increase deployed wind and solar to 3,600 gigawatts \u2014 six times as much as it had in 2020. The country is also building nuclear power plants and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2024\/09\/19\/climate\/nuclear-fusion-clean-energy-china-us\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">pursuing an aggressive program<\/a> to get fusion energy up and running \u2014 a near-limitless source of clean energy.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmk2zc9ef000h3b6pg1v0slzd@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            China is racing toward the energy of the future, while the US incursion into Venezuela to pursue its oil demonstrates it is stuck in the energy of the past, Shuo said.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmk2zc9ef000i3b6puf77juxt@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            \u201cThe largest economy in the world is embracing a petrostate approach,\u201d Shuo said. \u201cIt just reinforces this notion that the United States is increasingly going backward on the energy transition and on top of that, is very willing and able to deploy military forces to achieve that goal.\u201d\n    <\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"President Donald Trump wants the US to sell Venezuela\u2019s oil.
