It was uncommonly rainy and cool Wednesday evening when more than 120 people packed a strip of sidewalk along Central Avenue in midtown Phoenix. For months, that spot \u2014 right outside the field office of Immigration and Customs Enforcement<\/a> \u2014 has been a common protest site<\/a> to push back against the Trump administration\u2019s mass deportation agenda.\u00a0<\/p>\n Beyond the moisture, the air felt different on Wednesday night. Eight hours earlier, and more than 1,600 miles northeast in Minneapolis, an ICE agent shot and killed a U.S. citizen<\/a> in her car in the middle of a snowy residential street. Renee Nicole Good\u2019s killing was captured on video, sparking outrage across the country.<\/p>\n Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem blamed Good for her own death, claiming that the agent fired \u201cdefensive shots\u201d after she attempted to ram the agent with her car. Video captured by bystanders tells a different story, showing that Good was steering away from the agent when he fired three times, hitting her at least once in the face. Jacob Frey, the mayor of Minneapolis, called Noem\u2019s self-defense claim \u201cbullshit.\u201d<\/p>\n The pack of people who gathered outside the Phoenix field office on Wednesday said basically the same thing. The tightly packed group, led by several of Arizona\u2019s top immigration activist organizations, crowded the sidewalk in Phoenix to pay their respects to Good and call for action. Longtime immigration activist Raquel Ter\u00e1n outlined three demands: that a full and detailed investigation be conducted, all officers involved be brought to justice and ICE get out of \u201cour states now,\u201d she said into a microphone to the crowd.\u00a0<\/p>\n \u201cShe was a mother. She was a daughter. She was a neighbor. She was a friend to the people of Minneapolis,\u201d Ter\u00e1n said. \u201cWe are with the Minneapolis community.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n Attendees, bundled up in jackets, raincoats and hats, held lit thin white candles while others held small tea lights or protest signs attached to yardsticks. Signs read, \u201cFrom Phoenix to Minneapolis, STOP ICE TERROR,\u201d \u201cICE out of PHX\u201d on the Sun\u2019s logo or simply, \u201cFUCK ICE.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n The crowd was packed with elected officials, including state Rep. Lorena Austin, Phoenix City Councilmember Anna Hernandez, state Sen. Catherine Miranda and local school board members Signa Oliver and Ed Hermes. It was also a who\u2019s who of local immigration and progressive activists, including Sal Reza, Common Defense\u2019s Ricardo Reyes, Kai Newkirk and Borderland Initiative\u2019s Beth Strano, among others.\u00a0<\/p>\n Melissa Heger, a 33-year-old from Laveen, came out to the vigil with her husband, Brian, after watching the brutal video of Good\u2019s slaying. She was at her office on Wednesday afternoon when a coworker told her that ICE \u201cshot a woman in the face,\u201d Heger recalled. \u201cWe\u2019ve been so desensitized. It was three minutes before a call, and I was like, \u2018Holy shit,\u2019 and then I was like, \u2018I gotta get on this call.\u2019\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n Heger continued with her workday and didn\u2019t watch the video until later, but when she did, she quickly texted her husband. \u201cI felt rage,\u201d she told Phoenix New Times. \u201cWhat kind of world are we living in where this is happening? Where is it happening in broad daylight? It was just unbelievable.\u201d<\/p>\n The couple decided to attend the vigil as a way to cope with the community, rather than staying inside and scrolling through social media and watching the news on the couch.\u00a0<\/p>\n \u201cWhat\u2019s next in the fascist playbook? Because it\u2019s really scary,\u201d Heger said. \u201cWe\u2019re not accepting it. This is not the world that I\u2019m creating.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n The news of Good\u2019s death comes as organizers, elected officials and the immigrant community are gearing up for an influx of immigration activity<\/a> in Phoenix amid reports that ICE will be targeting the metro area<\/a> next for enforcement and detention activity. Chants of \u201cICE out of Phoenix\u201d echoed toward the ICE facility behind the group.\u00a0<\/p>\n \u201cI want to send a clear message to Trump and his fascist goons,\u201d Phoenix City Councilmember Anna Hernandez said during the vigil. \u201cFuck ICE. Stay the fuck out of Phoenix.
