{"id":501716,"date":"2026-01-08T16:34:13","date_gmt":"2026-01-08T16:34:13","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/501716\/"},"modified":"2026-01-08T16:34:13","modified_gmt":"2026-01-08T16:34:13","slug":"comeback-plan-intel-executive-explains-how-it-anticipates-getting-ahead-in-ai","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/501716\/","title":{"rendered":"Comeback plan: Intel executive explains how it anticipates getting ahead in AI"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>      Las Vegas, NV<br \/>\n        \u00a0\u2014\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmk3g02yh000b356piq9kvst0@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Intel, fresh off a historic investment from the Trump administration, has a plan to radically reshape the company\u2019s strategy.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmk4888r8000c3b6pheis3fl3@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            And if you think it involves AI\u2026 You\u2019re right.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmk3c7m6c00083b6pvfgklvzl@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Once the dominant player in chips, Intel has <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2024\/12\/04\/tech\/intel-brand-decline-gelsinger-retirement\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">struggled to keep pace<\/a> with rivals over the past decade, ceding ground to Qualcomm and Nvidia in crucial areas like mobile and AI. And while Intel is still the top maker of laptop and desktop chips, it\u2019s facing increased competition from rivals.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmk3g9hcv000g356p4bh4bbxm@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Under <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2025\/03\/12\/tech\/intel-new-ceo-lip-bu-tan\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">CEO Lip-Bu Tan<\/a>, who took the helm last March, the company has a new turnaround plan. And it depends in part on the newly announced Core Ultra Series 3 chip, which will be in almost every major new laptop this year.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmk3g1flu000d356pqnupa0hj@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            But Intel knows it needs to embed its chips in more than laptops to catch up \u2013 and potentially get ahead \u2013 in AI. That\u2019s why its new chips will also power devices like robots as the next major area of growth for AI, Jim Johnson, head of Intel\u2019s client computing group, said in an interview at the CES tech conference in Las Vegas this week.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmk47pl8v00003b6pb2v307a1@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            \u201cThe devices between PCs and the cloud are almost infinite,\u201d he said<strong> <\/strong>just after the company introduced its new chip.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmk3c7m6c000b3b6p02s0ovbi@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Intel is still the top PC chipmaker by a large margin. The International Data Corporation reported that<strong> <\/strong>Intel accounted for more than 71% of the market in 2024 (it hasn\u2019t published full-year data for 2025 yet).\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmk3fi09v0004356p9zjnbwzu@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            But it\u2019s facing increased competition from AMD, and Apple <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2020\/06\/21\/tech\/apple-mac-chips-wwdc\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">shifted away<\/a> from using Intel\u2019s chips in its MacBooks in favor of its own processors in 2020. Intel also <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2025\/07\/24\/tech\/intel-layoffs-15-percent-q2-earnings\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">cut 15% of its staff<\/a> last year, and shares (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/markets\/stocks\/INTC\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">INTC<\/a>) are down more than 18% over the past five years.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmk3e2c3n0000356p4mfmmius@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Intel wants the new chip to bolster its core PC business in two ways: first, by improving non-AI qualities that PC buyers look for, like battery life; and second, by boosting performance for the ways people now use AI.<strong> <\/strong>That includes coding agents or video-conferencing apps like Zoom that use AI to improve call quality. The company says the new chip will power more than 200 new PC designs.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmk3c7m6c000d3b6p4gaavewb@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            There\u2019s no one-size-fits-all for consumers\u2019 AI needs, Johnson<strong> <\/strong>said. \u201cIt\u2019s like, what does a reporter need that may be different than what a gamer wants?\u201d\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmk3c7m6c000e3b6p0ad638ta@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            But Intel\u2019s rivals are moving equally as<strong> <\/strong>fast.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmk4kx8cj00053b6p737t6xbr@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            AMD announced new chips at CES that can process larger AI models on laptops without having to rely on the cloud for processing, boosting privacy and lowering lag. Qualcomm, a relatively small player in the PC market, has also been pushing more deeply into the laptop space; it announced a new laptop chip at CES that it claims will offer multi-day battery life and is optimized for AI tasks.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmk3c7m6c000f3b6praxx9bra@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Intel will also have to avoid repeating its strategic missteps. That involves more than just figuring out what people want from their PCs; it also means making chips fast enough to keep up with, or surpass, rivals.\n    <\/p>\n<p>       <img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/01\/2025-12-24t110139z-1906507290-rc2k7ea98bk8-rtrmadp-3-usa-trump-intel-ceo.JPG\" alt=\"Intel CEO Lip-Bu Tan speaks at a company conference in San Jose, California, on April 29, 2025.\" class=\"image_large__dam-img image_large__dam-img--loading\" onload=\"this.classList.remove('image_large__dam-img--loading')\" onerror=\"imageLoadError(this)\" height=\"4339\" width=\"6500\" loading=\"lazy\"\/><\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmk3c7m6c000g3b6pnqqveg8u@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Tan is working on that, according to Johnson, who reports to him directly.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmk3c7m6c000h3b6pprzeuxiz@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            In one of their first one-on-one meetings, Tan encouraged Johnson to text him if customers were unhappy.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmk3c7m6c000i3b6pnbmyaiv6@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            \u201c(Tan) wants to know good news, bad news, problems, plans,\u201d Johnson said.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmk3c7m6c000k3b6p2bnq7c44@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Like other major chipmakers, Intel is betting on emerging technologies like humanoid robots for future growth. And it\u2019s making some progress.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmk3c7m6c000l3b6pp7arvl3d@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Oversonic Robotics, a company that makes humanoid robots for healthcare and other industries, plans to switch from Nvidia to Intel\u2019s Core Ultra 3 chip to power its robots.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmk3c7m6c000m3b6pgda0zwat@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Costs were lower overall and performance was faster since Intel\u2019s chips don\u2019t have to connect to cloud servers to process requests, according to Intel spokesperson Nina Mehlhaf. (Oversonic Robotics still uses Nvidia\u2019s tech to train its AI models, however.)\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmk3c7m6c000n3b6p3h4m4s67@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            But<strong> <\/strong>Nvidia\u2019s chips remain<strong> <\/strong>the beating heart of data centers powering AI services, thrusting it to the forefront of the AI boom and briefly making it the world\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2025\/10\/29\/tech\/nvidia-5-trillion-valuation-ai\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">first $5 trillion public company<\/a>. Robots are a major part of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2026\/01\/05\/tech\/vera-rubin-nvidia-ai-ces\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Nvidia\u2019s efforts<\/a>. It announced new AI models for<strong> <\/strong>use in robotics and showcased how its tech is powering robots in healthcare and other industries at CES.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmk3c6bvf00003b6phu3uv2j1@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Still, the demand for humanoid robots is unclear. Bill Ray, an analyst following emerging technologies and robotics for market research firm Gartner, said deployments of humanoid robots are scarce, and they still<strong> <\/strong>face too many technical and physical limitations to be practical.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmk3c7m6c000o3b6pe52k10qv@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            But Johnson remains positive about Intel\u2019s direction, and Wall Street seems to agree. Intel shares gained roughly 84% in 2025 and are up roughly 98% year-over-year.
