{"id":501740,"date":"2026-01-08T16:50:11","date_gmt":"2026-01-08T16:50:11","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/501740\/"},"modified":"2026-01-08T16:50:11","modified_gmt":"2026-01-08T16:50:11","slug":"saudi-backed-forces-move-to-capture-key-yemeni-city-as-crisis-with-uae-deepens","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/501740\/","title":{"rendered":"Saudi-backed forces move to capture key Yemeni city as crisis with UAE deepens"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmk5gb1gs000x28p467i0g2td@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Saudi-backed forces moved to capture a key southern Yemeni city on Thursday after Riyadh accused the UAE of helping a separatist leader flee.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmk5gcuik0002356p57jnwbru@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Citing \u201creliable intelligence,\u201d the Saudi-led coalition in Yemen said the leader of Yemen\u2019s UAE-backed Southern Transitional Council (STC), Aidarous al-Zubaidi, left the country by boat \u201cin the dead of night\u201d for Somaliland, before boarding an aircraft to Mogadishu, which later transported him to a military airport in Abu Dhabi.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmk5gcuik0003356p7g5x55f7@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            CNN has reached out to the UAE foreign ministry for comment.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmk5gcuik0004356p305fod6e@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            The interior ministry of the Saudi-backed Yemeni government said in a statement that government-allied National Shield Forces (NSF) had \u201csecured\u201d the southern city of Aden and its security situation was \u201cunder control.\u201d The NSF posted a video on social media showing a large convoy of military vehicles mobilizing to \u201csecure several provinces\u201d in the south that had been captured by the STC and allied militias. CNN cannot independently verify the claims.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmk5gcuik0005356pxt1puju1@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Aden had been the seat of Yemen\u2019s government since the Iran-backed Houthi movement took over the capital Sana\u2019a in 2014, prompting a military intervention by Saudi Arabia and the UAE a year later. Last month, government officials stationed there fled to Riyadh when the southern forces, led by Al Zubaidi, launched a military offensive to take over the area last month.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmk5gcuik0006356pegqr9d2q@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Over the past decade, UAE and Saudi agendas in the country diverged, leading them to support rival factions.<strong> <\/strong>In particular, the UAE\u2019s backing of southern separatists was at odds<strong> <\/strong>with Saudi Arabia\u2019s support for a unified and stable Yemen at its border. The UAE pulled most of its troops from Yemen in 2019, but a small contingent of what it called counter terrorism forces remained.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmk5gcuik0007356ptm4ckb3z@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            The advance of STC forces across key southern Yemeni provinces early December infuriated Riyadh and triggered an unprecedented public dispute with its Emirati neighbor, culminating in Saudi airstrikes on UAE shipments and a call by the Yemeni government for the remaining UAE forces to leave the country in 24 hours, which Saudi Arabia endorsed.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmk5gcuik0009356plirwmid6@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Following the UAE\u2019s withdrawal, Yemeni government forces, with Saudi air support, launched a counteroffensive that pushed the separatists to their former stronghold in Aden. Under intense military pressure, the STC\u2019s leadership agreed to hold talks in Riyadh aimed at de-escalating the conflict.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmk5gcuik000a356pg1l7tmbl@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            The Saudi-led coalition said Wednesday that al-Zubaidi was expected to accompany the STC delegation, but instead mobilized \u201ca large military force\u201d to create \u201cchaos and unrest\u201d.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmk5gb5j50000356p4sfbb22w@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Following the statement, Yemen\u2019s internationally recognized government accused al-Zubaidi of \u201chigh treason\u201d for \u201cinciting internal strife\u201d.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmk5gcuik000b356p1sfwfhyp@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            An STC foreign affairs official, Amr Al-Bidh, said in a briefing on Tuesday that the delegation of more than fifty STC officials had been incommunicado since arriving in Riyadh.
