A woman has died after being hit by the driver of a vehicle while crossing the road at a crosswalk in central Etobicoke on Thursday morning, Toronto police say.<\/p>\n
The crash happened near Islington Avenue and Dixon Road.<\/p>\n
Toronto police said they were called to that area just after 9 a.m. for reported of a pedestrian who had been struck by a truck.<\/p>\n
Speaking with the media at the scene late Thursday morning, Duty Insp. Peter Wallace said the driver of a box truck travelling southbound on Islington made a right turn onto Dixon and hit a female pedestrian who was crossing the street southbound at the crosswalk.<\/p>\n
\u201cOfficers attended the scene and rendered medical assistance. Sadly, the female was pronounced deceased at the scene,\u201d said Wallace, who added that the driver of the truck, a 26-year-old man, remained on scene and \u201ccooperated\u201d with police.<\/p>\n
He said investigators are working to notify the victim\u2019s next of kin and are not releasing her name or age. The duty inspector would only say that she is a woman.<\/p>\n
\u201cOur thoughts are with the family. This is an unfortunate and tragic incident,\u201d Wallace said.<\/p>\n
Traffic Services is investigating and is in the process now of reconstruction the scene, and officers are also canvassing the area and speaking with witnesses, Wallace said.<\/p>\n
Islington was closed at Dixon but has since reopened.<\/p>\n
