(Photo courtesy of San Diego Unified School District)

San Diego Unified School District just welcomed two new student trustees for the upcoming school year.

The trustees, Alina Nguyen of Hoover High School and Ashley Ordaz of University City High School began their tenures on July 1, but won’t serve in their first meeting until August.

Though the student trustees are voting members, their votes are only recorded preferentially — essentially, student trustees can voice their thoughts and vote as they see fit, but their votes don’t dictate the board’s final decisions.

Nguyen and Ordaz aren’t the first in their position, and likely won’t be the last. They are the 10th and 11th student trustees since the position was created six years ago. They will both receive $1,736 in monthly compensation just as adult board members do.

Ordaz, a rising junior, was born in Las Vegas, but raised in San Diego. She plans to pursue international relations later in life. She enjoys going to the beach, visiting museums and traveling.

“I see this role of leadership not just as one that I won, but as a responsibility to uplift underrepresented diverse voices and act on real issues that must be fixed,” she said in a press release.

One thing Ordaz hopes to focus on is school safety and ensuring students feel safe attending class every day.

Nguyen, a rising senior, also has dipped her toes in the water of diplomacy. She attended the School for Ethics and Global Leadership, where she studied diplomacy and global justice in London and Washington, D.C.

“I’m committed to ensuring every student feels seen and heard, and I carry that mission forward with pride,” she said.

A goal for Nguyen’s time on the board is to open more wellness centers throughout high schools, and if possible, middle schools too.

The student trustee position puts students’ voices front and center for the board in the decision-making process. The position was established in 2019 and isn’t the only one of its kind. Roughly two-thirds of California’s school districts have student board members as well.

Superintendent Fabiola Bagula said the previous trustees, Joseph Cruz and Quinton Baldis, were “continuously elevating the conversation reminding us how important it is to center student voice and student needs in every single thing you do.”

Board President Cody Petterson echoed the sentiment. He said the student positions “really did bring home how important it is to always keep the student first and foremost in our minds.”

Ashley Ordaz is one of the newly appointed student trustee board members for the 2025-2026 school year.
