Cook County Department of Public Health (CCDPH) has launched a new\u00a0awareness\u00a0campaign,\u00a0\u201cLead-Safe\u00a0Cook\u00a0County,\u201d\u00a0to\u00a0encourage eligible suburban Cook County\u00a0residents and homeowners\u00a0to apply for\u00a0free\u00a0lead removal services\u00a0and\u00a0free\u00a0home repairs.\u00a0\u00a0Lead\u00a0is a\u00a0toxic\u00a0metal\u00a0that can be hard to see but\u00a0is\u00a0very harmful. There is no safe level of\u00a0lead\u00a0exposure.\u00a0Even\u00a0small\u00a0amounts\u00a0can\u00a0cause harm over time.\u00a0Each year, about\u00a0200\u00a0children in suburban Cook County test positive for elevated blood lead levels, which can\u00a0cause lasting problems with growth, learning and behavior.\u00a0During\u00a0pregnancy,\u00a0lead\u00a0exposure can also pass to the baby and affect development before birth. The program is open to both homeowners and tenants.
