More than 400 people gathered outside Dallas City Hall Thursday night to march and protest the killing of a Minneapolis woman<\/a> shot by a U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement officer. <\/p>\n

Protests were hastily planned in cities across the country after federal officials confirmed Wednesday that Renee Nicole Macklin Good, a 37-year-old mother of three, was fatally shot during an immigration operation.<\/p>\n

Video taken by bystanders showed an officer approaching Good\u2019s car, demanding she open the door and grabbing the handle. When Good started to pull forward, a different ICE officer standing in front of the vehicle immediately fired at least two shots at close range.<\/p>\n

President Donald Trump, and others in his administration, have characterized the shooting as an act of self-defense<\/a>, suggesting Good used her vehicle as a weapon. But Minneapolis Mayor Jacob Frey said video of the incident shows the argument to be \u201cgarbage.\u201d<\/p>\n

Organizers of the Dallas event said they\u2019re not only protesting ICE\u2019s actions, but demanding greater oversight.<\/p>\n

Elise Damara with the National Alliance Against Racism and Political Oppression said planning started shortly after news of the Minneapolis shooting broke. <\/p>\n

In footage leading up to the gunfire, Damara said she noticed Good was passing out whistles \u2014 the same resource Damara\u2019s organization uses to alert the public of the presence of ICE.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt could\u2019ve been anyone,\u201d she said. <\/p>\n

She also pledged to end the event should it turn violent.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe\u2019re just here for a peaceful protest,\u201d Damara said.<\/p>\n

A projection across the front of the building alternated between pictures honoring Good and \u201cICE out now\u201d graphics. The projection encouraged onlookers to donate and support Good\u2019s family through a fundraiser shown via a QR code.<\/p>\n

Using a portable sound system, another organizer acknowledged news reports of a second incident in Portland<\/a>, where federal immigration officers shot and wounded two people outside a hospital. <\/p>\n

As they marched through downtown, drum beats accompanied their chants: \u201cThe people united will never be defeated\u201d and \u201cJustice for Renee Nicole Good.\u201d <\/p>\n

Onlookers left restaurants and offices to line the streets. As Dallas police officers controlled traffic, others stepped out of their cars to record the action.<\/p>\n

\u201cThis is just the latest example of how our rights to simply exist are not only being threatened, but compromised,\u201d Dallas City Council member Adam Bazaldua said of Good\u2019s death in a statement sent to The Dallas Morning News. <\/p>\n

\u201cThis type of lawlessness is exactly why we as a City Council stood firm with our DPD Chief and told ICE that they are not welcome in our city.\u201d<\/p>\n
