{"id":502810,"date":"2026-01-09T03:16:11","date_gmt":"2026-01-09T03:16:11","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/502810\/"},"modified":"2026-01-09T03:16:11","modified_gmt":"2026-01-09T03:16:11","slug":"ding-dong-ditch-murder-suspect-may-face-capital-murder-bond-reduction-denied","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/502810\/","title":{"rendered":"\u2018Ding-dong ditch\u2019 murder suspect may face capital murder, bond reduction denied"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"dist__Box-sc-1fnzlkn-0 dist__TextBase-sc-1fnzlkn-3 bYFsJw cuqaEv article-text\"><strong>Houston<\/strong> \u2013 Gonzalo Leon, 43, faced Harris County District Court Judge Emily DeToto with defense attorneys Gianpaolo Macerola and Jose Vela to argue for lower bail on Thursday.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dist__Box-sc-1fnzlkn-0 dist__TextBase-sc-1fnzlkn-3 bYFsJw cuqaEv article-text\">Leon is the Houston man accused of shooting and killing 11-year-old Julian Guzman who police said was playing a ding-dong-ditch prank at Leon\u2019s home in the 9700 block of Mimbrough Street on the night of August 30, 2025.<\/p>\n<ul class=\"dist__Box-sc-1fnzlkn-0 kDvXdO font_openSans articleList\">\n<li class=\"dist__Box-sc-1fnzlkn-0 dist__StackBase-sc-1fnzlkn-7 ecGWWE iQviKm\"\/><\/ul>\n<p class=\"dist__Box-sc-1fnzlkn-0 dist__TextBase-sc-1fnzlkn-3 bYFsJw cuqaEv article-text\">He is currently facing a murder charge and was indicted by a grand jury in September 2025.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dist__Box-sc-1fnzlkn-0 dist__TextBase-sc-1fnzlkn-3 bYFsJw cuqaEv article-text\">In court on Thursday, Leon appeared expressionless with visibly more facial hair.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dist__Box-sc-1fnzlkn-0 dist__TextBase-sc-1fnzlkn-3 bYFsJw cuqaEv article-text\">Attorneys for Leon on Thursday said Leon\u2019s life has been \u201ccompletely uprooted\u201d by this tragedy and asked the judge to lower his bond to $500,000.<\/p>\n<ul class=\"dist__Box-sc-1fnzlkn-0 kDvXdO font_openSans articleList\">\n<li class=\"dist__Box-sc-1fnzlkn-0 dist__StackBase-sc-1fnzlkn-7 ecGWWE iQviKm\"\/><\/ul>\n<p class=\"dist__Box-sc-1fnzlkn-0 dist__TextBase-sc-1fnzlkn-3 bYFsJw cuqaEv article-text\">\u201cHe has zero criminal history,\u201d said attorney Jose Vela.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dist__Box-sc-1fnzlkn-0 dist__TextBase-sc-1fnzlkn-3 bYFsJw cuqaEv article-text\">Leon is an army veteran and was also in the National Guard. His attorneys said he was honorably discharged.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dist__Box-sc-1fnzlkn-0 dist__TextBase-sc-1fnzlkn-3 bYFsJw cuqaEv article-text\">Before his arrest, they said he was making $3500-$4000 a month.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dist__Box-sc-1fnzlkn-0 dist__TextBase-sc-1fnzlkn-3 bYFsJw cuqaEv article-text\">Vela told the judge his wife and child have had to move out of their house and into an apartment after his arrest.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dist__Box-sc-1fnzlkn-0 dist__TextBase-sc-1fnzlkn-3 bYFsJw cuqaEv article-text\">\u201cHis entire life was flipped upside down,\u201d said Macerola after court on Thursday.<\/p>\n<ul class=\"dist__Box-sc-1fnzlkn-0 kDvXdO font_openSans articleList\">\n<li class=\"dist__Box-sc-1fnzlkn-0 dist__StackBase-sc-1fnzlkn-7 ecGWWE iQviKm\"\/><\/ul>\n<p class=\"dist__Box-sc-1fnzlkn-0 dist__TextBase-sc-1fnzlkn-3 bYFsJw cuqaEv article-text\">Prosecutor Melissa Hoffman argued Leon\u2019s bond should remain the same stating that the future safety of the community is of concern.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dist__Box-sc-1fnzlkn-0 dist__TextBase-sc-1fnzlkn-3 bYFsJw cuqaEv article-text\">\u201cInnocence was taken without justification,\u201d Hoffman said in court.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dist__Box-sc-1fnzlkn-0 dist__TextBase-sc-1fnzlkn-3 bYFsJw cuqaEv article-text\">Judge DeToto denied a bond reduction for Leon.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dist__Box-sc-1fnzlkn-0 dist__TextBase-sc-1fnzlkn-3 bYFsJw cuqaEv article-text\">Hoffman confirmed in court that state prosecutors are working with the grand jury to upgrade Leon\u2019s charge to capital murder.<\/p>\n<p>Gonzalo Leon (kprc)<\/p>\n<p class=\"dist__Box-sc-1fnzlkn-0 dist__TextBase-sc-1fnzlkn-3 bYFsJw cuqaEv article-text\">\u201cThe district attorney\u2019s office has been going back and forth with the grand jury to determine whether or not they\u2019re gonna upgrade any of these charges. Typically, that decision is made pretty quickly. It\u2019s been four months. Any minute that someone is behind bars feels like an eternity,&#8221; said Macerola.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dist__Box-sc-1fnzlkn-0 dist__TextBase-sc-1fnzlkn-3 bYFsJw cuqaEv article-text\">Attorneys for Leon said they are still waiting on evidence from HPD.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dist__Box-sc-1fnzlkn-0 dist__TextBase-sc-1fnzlkn-3 bYFsJw cuqaEv article-text\">\u201cThe entirety of the case file from HPD has not been turned over to us,\u201d said Macerola. <\/p>\n<p class=\"dist__Box-sc-1fnzlkn-0 dist__TextBase-sc-1fnzlkn-3 bYFsJw cuqaEv article-text\">On Wednesday, Leon\u2019s attorneys also filed motions to get a private interview jail room and up to $8000 in public funds for a crime scene analyst.
