{"id":503084,"date":"2026-01-09T05:58:28","date_gmt":"2026-01-09T05:58:28","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/503084\/"},"modified":"2026-01-09T05:58:28","modified_gmt":"2026-01-09T05:58:28","slug":"were-not-out-of-the-woods-yet-nyc-flu-season-continues","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/503084\/","title":{"rendered":"&#8216;We&#8217;re not out of the woods yet&#8217;: NYC flu season continues"},"content":{"rendered":"<p data-block-key=\"k4tvq\">New York City health officials urged ongoing vigilance against the flu Thursday, including flu shots for kids and adults.<\/p>\n<p data-block-key=\"820nv\">A record 4,546 New Yorkers <a href=\"https:\/\/gothamist.com\/news\/flu-hospitalizations-in-new-york-hit-record-high\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\">were hospitalized<\/a> with the flu as of the last week of December, according to the latest <a href=\"https:\/\/www.health.ny.gov\/diseases\/communicable\/respiratory_viruses\/activity\/2025-2026\/docs\/current_respiratory_report.pdf\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\">state data<\/a>. And while flu cases started to decline that week after hitting record highs, the virus remains in heavy circulation, Dr. Michelle Morse, the acting city health commissioner, said in a briefing.<\/p>\n<p data-block-key=\"7vrqm\">\u201cWe\u2019re not out of the woods yet,\u201d Morse said, adding that flu season can be unpredictable and could extend into May.<\/p>\n<p data-block-key=\"2kfn9\">The city\u2019s renewed call for vaccination against the flu comes after the Trump administration <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hhs.gov\/press-room\/cdc-acts-presidential-memorandum-update-childhood-immunization-schedule.html\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\">made changes<\/a> to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention\u2019s childhood vaccination schedule this week that deprioritized flu shots and some other vaccines.<\/p>\n<p data-block-key=\"ohes\">Some vaccines that were previously recommended for all children are <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2026\/01\/05\/health\/children-vaccines-cdc-kennedy.html\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\">now recommended<\/a> by the CDC only for high-risk children or those whose parents have engaged in \u201cshared clinical decision-making\u201d with their doctors.<\/p>\n<p data-block-key=\"jpf2\">State health officials have said the changes will not affect New York\u2019s school vaccination requirements and have directed health care providers to continue their existing immunization practices.<\/p>\n<p data-block-key=\"2rq42\">The flu shot is currently only <a href=\"https:\/\/www.health.ny.gov\/prevention\/immunization\/schools\/school_vaccines\/\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\">required<\/a> for children in day care and pre-K in New York, but Morse said Thursday everyone should get it.<\/p>\n<p data-block-key=\"4e80o\">\u201cIt&#8217;s not too late for New Yorkers to receive their flu vaccine,\u201d Morse said. \u201cWhile the current flu strain has developed mutations, the currently available, updated flu shot has still been shown to prevent serious complications and hospitalizations.\u201d<\/p>\n<p data-block-key=\"2hpu0\">Hospitalizations related to the flu continued to climb the last week in December, even as cases fell, state data shows. Two children have died from the flu this season, according to the state report.
