{"id":503216,"date":"2026-01-09T07:23:23","date_gmt":"2026-01-09T07:23:23","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/503216\/"},"modified":"2026-01-09T07:23:23","modified_gmt":"2026-01-09T07:23:23","slug":"alberta-doctors-plead-for-state-of-emergency-as-hospitals-overwhelmed","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/503216\/","title":{"rendered":"Alberta doctors plead for state of emergency as hospitals overwhelmed"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Doctors want the Alberta government to declare a state of emergency for hospitals across the province, as more people come forward with stories of nearly dying while waiting to be seen.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/06\/70c8fc80.png\" alt=\"\" style=\"position:absolute;width:1px;height:1px\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer-when-downgrade\"\/><\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s very difficult to deliver safe and timely care in all of our emergency departments and hospitals across the province right now,\u201d said Paul Parks, president-elect of the emergency physicians\u2019 section of the Alberta Medical Association.<\/p>\n<p>He spoke out on behalf of hundreds of emergency and internal medicine doctors across the province.<\/p>\n<p>Physicians are using concerning language, saying they have never seen Alberta\u2019s emergency departments as overwhelmed as they have been this winter.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis isn\u2019t just Dr. Paul Park saying the sky is falling,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis is actually a plea for help to our government from our front-line health-care workers in our hospitals, saying it is getting impossible to deliver safety and timely care to all of patients and we need help \u2014 we need a provincial response.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Story continues below advertisement<\/p>\n<p>Long wait times in the E.R., <a href=\"https:\/\/globalnews.ca\/tag\/code-red\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">code reds<\/a> when there are no ambulances available, lengthy waits for surgeries and tests, situations where four people are put in hospital rooms designed for two, and more sick patients than beds to put them in is, sadly, nothing new in Alberta \u2014 it\u2019s been a growing issue for over a decade.<\/p>\n<p>\t\t\t\t\t\t<img decoding=\"async\" class=\"c-video__image\" alt=\"Click to play video: 'Alberta\u2019s plan to increase access to health care \u2018doomed to fail,\u2019 critics say'\" width=\"640\" height=\"360\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/01\/1767943393_554_ONLINE_STILL_ACUTE_CARE.jpg\" loading=\"lazy\"   data-\/><\/p>\n<p>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t2:06<br \/>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tAlberta\u2019s plan to increase access to health care \u2018doomed to fail,\u2019 critics say\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/p>\n<p>Parks said the increasing population is only exacerbating the pressure.<\/p>\n<p>At the same time, the province has spent recent years dismantling the province-wide, all-encompassing Alberta Health Services provider into four different agencies \u2014 which Parks said hasn\u2019t helped.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"c-blockquote l-article__blockquote\">\n<p class=\"c-blockquote__content l-article__blockquoteContent\">\u201cFor months and months, we\u2019ve been pleading for help. She said it isn\u2019t the first time she\u2019s had a sudden-onset hypertensive crisis.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI have gone by EMS to the hospital twice for this,\u201d she said, adding those times she was triaged to be seen quickly.<\/p>\n<p>This time \u2014 not so much.<\/p>\n<p>Marlow said she waited seven hours before being seen by a doctor. She was left alone in a wheelchair in the waiting room, she said, because her paramedics said they were being sent back out to a different call.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI communicated to the nurses that I really did think I was dying. I was having chest pains. My vision wasn\u2019t great, I couldn\u2019t feel my hands, I knew my blood pressure was still severely high. I could not stop throwing up.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Marlow knew from her 33 years of professional experience as a nurse that something was wrong.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"c-blockquote l-article__blockquote\">\n<p class=\"c-blockquote__content l-article__blockquoteContent\">\u201cI was alone, I was scared, I did worry that I was going to die there in the E.R. that night.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>Eventually, she was able to get a nurse\u2019s attention and things progressed.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAt that point she did check my blood pressure again and was quite alarmed \u2014 and I was in, within a few minutes from that time.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Story continues below advertisement<\/p>\n<p>\t\t\t\t\t\t<img decoding=\"async\" class=\"c-video__image\" alt=\"Click to play video: 'Will Alberta\u2019s public-private health approach reduce wait times? A deeper look into dual-model practice\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/p>\n<p>Marlow was later told by her cardiologist she likely only survived because her heart is strong \u2014 but next time she may not be as lucky.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"c-blockquote l-article__blockquote\">\n<p class=\"c-blockquote__content l-article__blockquoteContent\">\u201cHonestly, it was probably one of the worse nights of my life.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>Every day across Alberta, Parks said there\u2019s hundreds of sick or injured people sitting in pain in waiting rooms or laying on stretchers in hospital hallways, waiting their turn for desperately-needed care.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThere\u2019s lots of patients that are suffering for 10, 12, 14 hours with severe pain that we can\u2019t get pain meds or comfort to. And so they\u2019re just pleading for help: please, help the frontline health-care workers do their job,\u201d Parks said.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"c-blockquote l-article__blockquote\">\n<p class=\"c-blockquote__content l-article__blockquoteContent\">\u201cWho is actually accountable to lead our province-wide response to it? We don\u2019t have a clue.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>Parks says there needs to be a plan for short-, medium- and long-term solutions and it needs to happen now.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo one hospital can dig their way out of this. No one corridor can dig their way out this. Hospital spaces are complex to build and won\u2019t come online for the better part of a decade.<\/p>\n<p>He said Alberta can\u2019t wait and help is needed now.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cLet\u2019s work together on provincial solutions that we know we can implement,\u201d he said. \u201cLet\u2019s not keep quibbling about how bad the crisis is.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>In a statement Thursday, the province thanked doctors for their input. It also acknowledged long emergency department wait times remain a serious concern.<\/p>\n<p>\n\t\t\tMore on Health<br \/>\n\t\t\tMore videos\n\t\t<\/p>\n<p>The government said respiratory virus and flu season has led to more patients in hospitals, but staff have made changes to help.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAn early and unusually large flu spike in mid-December added pressure to hospitals with more patients requiring care and hospitalization that we\u2019re currently seeing,\u201d said a statement from the Ministry of Hospital and Surgical Health Services.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe are cautiously optimistic that demand may ease as cases in the community stabilize especially in Calgary and Edmonton, but hospitals will remain busy throughout the season.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The ministry said changes are being implemented such as:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Accelerating discharges and transfers where appropriate<\/li>\n<li>Limiting non-essential inbound transfers<\/li>\n<li>Dedicating 336 beds specifically for respiratory virus season<\/li>\n<li>Opening designated surge spaces to manage increased demand<\/li>\n<li>Transitioning patients who no longer require acute care out of hospital into the community<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>The province says those efforts are working and conditions should improve more once the flu season winds down.<\/p>\n<p>Story continues below advertisement<\/p>\n<p>\t\t\t\t\t\t<img decoding=\"async\" class=\"c-video__image\" alt=\"Click to play video: 'Edmonton families facing long health care wait times'\" width=\"640\" height=\"360\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/01\/6P_CAPACITY_FOLO-PKG_OM01KO03_thumbnail_1280x720.jpg\" loading=\"lazy\"   data-\/><\/p>\n<p>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t1:59<br \/>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tEdmonton families facing long health care wait times\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/p>\n<p>Parks said the province needs a reality check to how bad it is on the ground.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIf the ministers and the premier and their PR teams want to say, \u2018Oh, it\u2019s not so bad. It\u2019s just a little bit of influenza and we\u2019ll get better.\u2019 That is absolutely not true.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"c-blockquote l-article__blockquote\">\n<p class=\"c-blockquote__content l-article__blockquoteContent\">\u201cWhat will it take for them to acknowledge the state we\u2019re in? Do they need more and more publicized tragic deaths?\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>Late Thursday afternoon, the Alberta government issued an updated statement:<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe system is using all available resources; calls for a \u2018public health state of emergency\u2019 are misguided and would add nothing to what is already being done.
